World of Widgets; Something new, something fun, something chic, something for keeps...

It was more than 2 years ago when I first came across widgets and had a couple installed on my personal sites & desktop. Some are stock market tickers, some tech & gadget's news & the rest are computer games' widgets (sudoku, tettris, pacman, you name it, they have it).

It was pretty exciting to have everything tailored to one's needs. I love the fact that I can find things meaningful & useful all within the same space & page. It beats having to bookmark your favorites.

Now that we have advanced to Web 2.0, life is beginning to get exciting & we are experiencing exponential growth in the way we live virtually. My recent discovery is Vimeo which I've done a review on last week. Not only is Vimeo an extremely creative & interesting site, it is one which offer its users extras. One such function which I totally love is the widget which allows members to select their favorite videos into a channel & to upload that widget onto any site like I'm doing here on Lunch. Below is my favorites of videos uploaded by Vimeo members. Check them out, these members are truly creative & professionals. I am totally amazed and delighted by what they have to offer to the world at large & I'm sharing their works here with you. Hope you like them! Alternatively, if you like, you can always sign up at Vimeo & create your own favorites and have them uploaded to any site you are building or to any blogs you are working on. It's truly fun & useful! A very personalised service Vimeo is offering. Oh, I almost forgotten! What is interesting about this particular widget is you can watch all the videos on this widget without leaving this site!!! That's the beauty of it! Love it, love it, love it!!! Now I'm watching Vimeo videos on Lunch! Probably at lunch too! :-) Isn't that cooooooool?!!!!!

Other web widgets which are equally interesting are NewsmapGoogle Maps & Virtual Earth.

I just got into widgets myself. I love the ones that work with my mac's dashboard. What are some of your fave widgets???

Yes, I've Mac & PC both. I like those on finance, esp for stock indices, currency conversion, etc... The one on newsmap which you can include in your blog is great. The other one is from NeoWorx which allows one to track which countries their visitors are from. Great stuff!

I highly recommend the one on Newsmap. It is a collection of news from different countries like U.S., U.K., Canada, France, Italy, Spain & even India! The news are further group into world news, business news, sport news, entertainment news, health news... Downright cool! A tiny but powerful widget!

About this topic

web widget is a portable chunk of code that can be installed and executed within any separate HTML-based web page by an end user without requiring additional compilation. They are derived from the idea of code reuse. Other terms used to describe web widgets include: gadget, badge, module, webjit, capsule, snippet, mini and flake. Web widgets usually but not always use DHTML, JavaScript, or Adobe Flash.

Widgets often take the form of on-screen tools (clocks, event countdowns, auction-tickers, stock market tickers, flight arrival information, daily weather etc).
