As Good as it Gets

Clearly one of the greatest albums you could select for turning the lights off, cranking up the stereo, and enjoying the mood. Pink Floyd was so good in the Animals/Dark Side/Wish You Were Here/Wall albums, it's hard to pick the best among them. Depends on the mood.

Wish You Were Here is slightly more laid back than the others, I would say. The Wall is more raw emotion as a comparison.

Cut-for-cut, this is probably the best album Pink Floyd ever released: passionate, pained, straightforward, and even powerful in a way that doesn't require the listener to be hyped up and out of their mind on LSD. The merits of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" might be debatable (less so the second half), but there's no debating the power of the rolling satire "Have a Cigar" or the even poignant "Wish You Were Here." The album, a paeon to departed and somewhat mentally unstable former bandleader Syd Barrett, has a bit of a split personality. The three songs in the middle comprise two radio-friendly complaints about the music biz and the title song, as generic a song of missing someone even though it was about Barrett. This CD is not for everyone. Just on the basis that this recording consists of five tracks may put off many people. And the fact that the ten movements of Shine On You Crazy Diamond take up two of these tracks may shock casual and non fans a little more.However, there is a great deal of creative instrumentation between Gilmour, Wright, Mason, and Waters throughout this release. Purposefully, I am writing this without having viewed any Amazon customer reviews of this album. Deliberately, I am writing this drunk, for as Latin speakers amongst you know, in vino veritas. Wish You Were Hereis a song cycle dedicated to Pink Floyd's original frontman,Syd Barrett, who'd flamed out years before: two grimly funny songs about the evils of the music business ("By the way, which one's Pink?"), and two long, touching ones about the band's vanished friend.
