If you are looking for a great and unique baby shower gift or you are simply a sleep deprived parent of a young baby, the Woombie is for you!

Why oh why did I get this only two months after she was born even though I knew about it and read all the great parent testimonials? I thought I would hold off on it to see if maybe she'll be a good sleeper, on her own, without any swaddling...hm. Big mistake! Yes, the first week from the hospital she slept well, just like all babies do, but it ends right about there. After the first week they sleep best swaddled, or they don't sleep at all. I was all for swaddling with a good old blanket, but the problem was - she is a wiggly one. Even when she was in my tummy she would kick and prod all day and night. Now the regular swaddling blanket lasted about two minutes and there she is with her arms in her face and awake again - after lulling her to sleep for an hour!

I thought that something like the swaddle wraps they have at Babies R Us would do the trick, but they only last one minute longer than a regular blanket. So I went online and finally ordered the Woombie for 'don't-you-ever-swaddle-me' babies on eBay. I was convinced by all the 'my baby now sleeps through the night' testimonials on their website and couldn't wait to get some sleep!

It arrived swiftly and after I washed it we used it the following night. No, we didn't hit it off right away, although she did sleep a little longer than usual, but the consecutive nights proved this $24 purchase worthwhile and a must for every parent. I now recommend it to all expectant moms I meet. Don't be alarmed if the baby is fussy or crying the first couple of times you are putting him/her in. They get used to it fast and you should be on your way to more  sleep (an additional 1 to 3 hours) in no time! This is also great if you ever have the need to rock your baby to sleep, how many times have you done that only to have her awake as you are putting her down?! In the Woombie, your warmth is retained for a while and baby does not awake when being layed down in cradle or crib. Plus, no more little arms startling the wee one. Even cooler, it takes all of 8 seconds to put the baby in it!

It comes in various sizes (see Wiki for more info), I have the Original Big Baby Woombie. There is also a Winter Woombie that is stretch fleece, the great thing with that one is that it has a buckle opening for a car seat. They also carry the Snapless Woombie, which is a lighter version of the original that is great for summer.

Note that when you wash it, the zipper seam takes a while to dry, longer than the rest of the Woombie. So if it is soiled overnight, you have to wash it right away in the morning in order for it to dry by bedtime (unless you want to tumble dry and take any chances with it shrinking). If you can afford it, get a couple in various sizes! After the baby is two months it is good to use a sleep positioner with the Woombie, they tend to roll over easily in it.

EcoMama Green Factor: Not really a 'green' product. The Woombie is made in China of non-organic cotton and lycra blend. But you can get one Made in the US for an additional $2.
