Everything We Need...

Way back-in-the-day I used WordPerfect as it was the software used by lawyers offices and small publishers. Then somehow it dropped from my radar as the places I worked at fell into the MSWord rut and I did too. (Don't ask me about WangWord and Norsk-data!) Still memories of WP's strengths lingered in my mind so when I had the opportunity to try it again, I went for it.

Now these days I'm a mom-of-all-trades so I no longer am a power-user, but I can tell you what my daughter (10 yo) and I discovered as we used the basic features. First, it's easy to transition from MSWord. If that's what's keeping you from trying WP, do not worry. The basic functions are recognizable and you can be productive out of the gate. My daughter had no problem making a switch and she's a noobie typist. For myself, there are some functions I haven't figured out how to invoke. For example, how to make the Paragraph marks show up. I know it's there, but it just didn't jump out at me. The other activity I haven't figured out yet is what WP's commands are. If I want to search for what would be ^p in Word, I don't know how to do that. But then, how many people want to do these things.

As for power, it was clear to me that WP is superior. It copes easily with Word documents and even PDFs. You can stay in the Word environment, or switch back and forth from it to the WP environment at will.

While there is a ton to love -- like the font library, graphics, etc. -- the feature I love best is how well WordPerfect deals with HTML. Just as this package showed up, to give you an example, I had a blogging project I was beginning. Well those of you who have used Word know that if you type things up in Word, when you go to post you get a ton of absolutely useless code that bloats the post size by about 400%. With WP you don't get that. If you want, you can get just the text with no code. WOOT! I will NEVER use Word again for this type of project.

Even a 10 yo found WordPerfect easy to use.

WP is still superior to MSWord when it comes to abilities.

If you are blogging I highly recommend it. In fact, I just recommend it. If you aren't going to go with OpenOffice, then this is the guy to use.

I felt like a kid in a candy store with this program, the massive library of fonts, clip art ( 8000!) and templates made me want to sit in front of my computer and play all day long. Whether is resumes or labels, or making spreadsheets of any kind, this program has everything, it's so cool and fun it makes me want to write books just so that I could use it every day. I also love how it's compatible with so many types of documents that I can't imagine have to open a file that cannot be accessed through …

This is Corel's latest release of WordPerfect office applications, ready for Windows 7 and compatible with current Microsoft Office files. WordPerfect is a mainstay of the wordprocessing market - it's the 1st wordprocessing software I ever used, back in the pre-Windows MS-DOS days. Things have changed a lot since then and Microsoft Word/MS Office have dominated the market, in part due to MS having its software installed by most PC manufacturers. Since Corel, the graphics powerhouse, obtained WordPerfect …

Let's start off with the bottom line:     If you're using version X3 or below, you absolutely want to upgrade to X5. You'll gain some great new features.    If you're using X4 there's no urgent reason to upgrade. Yes, X5 has some new and useful features, but the upgrade will yield more of a "that's nice" reaction rather than a "wow!" reaction.    If you're using Word, Open Docs or something else, don't work in a law office or need to do …
