I'm fairly certain that fans of hip hop are tired of what's being played on the radio now. The same playlist of 5 songs over and over again.
XV is a refreshing change from the norm and definitely different from most rappers. First of all, he claims that he doesn't smoke or drink. Say what?! So right off the bat, I give him a huge amount of credit considering that the industry is overflowing with drugs/alcohol/temptation.
But outside of that, XV raps about nerdy things like video games, 90's shows, comic books and raps about other issues like growing up and dreams by using clever metaphors: "I never ran track but I chased my dreams".
He's already collaborated with big name artists in his young career: Talib Kweli, J. Cole, Kid Cudi, and Kanye West just to name a few.
I also listen to a lot of Japanese hip-hop so I was pleasantly surprised when I found out he collaborated with who I consider Japan's finest producer Bach Logic:
Perhaps the most impressive piece to his resume is his mixtape titled, "40 days & 40 nights" where he delivered a new song every morning and night for 40 days/nights. To say the least, I enjoyed every part of it.
XV announced that he signed a deal with Warner Bros. and I'm looking forward to his album titled, "The Kid With the Green Backpack", scheduled to drop in 2011. So with that and Lupe's next album set for this year, it'll be a good year for the cool nerds in hip hop.
