Good salsa for a great cause

[Homeboy] Industries recently launched a line of tortilla chips and salsas to be sold in southern California Ralphs supermarkets. I learned about it in this article by the LA Times.

Homeboy Industries was started by Father Greg Boyle (a favorite at LMU) with the mission to help at-risk youth and gang members with tattoo removal, job placement, housing, medical and mental health expenses.

They have many different businesses that help fund the program and help employ recovering gang members. There is a bakery, silkscreening, embroidery, press, cafe and catering.

I have never been to Homegirl Cafe (where the recipes were based off of) but I have always heard how tasty and fresh all their food was. I was really excited to try the salsas and had a feeling they would be really yummy.

So far, I have tried the Morita and the Mango and the chips. The morita salsa was a beautiful bright orange color, super fresh and just spicy enough. It had a very distinct flavor of roasted tomatos. The sauce was a little thin for my taste, but it would be really great on chilie rellenos or wet burritos. The mango salsa was great too, really sweet, and with a kick, the chunks of mango were huge!

The tortilla chips were pretty average, not amazing but not bad. I liked the thin strip shape that they come in.

I am excited to try the tomatillo and the mole sauce as well. These salsas are comparable to the other store bought packaged salsas, price as well, so if you are in the area, do try it out!

The salsa preparations sound delicious and devoid of too many calories.

I love Homeboy Industries- it's an amazing organization and I'm glad to see that they're branching out to raise money for their very important cause. I love the name of that cafe and next time I'm in LA, I'm going to have to check it out! The salsas sound super good too, I hope they branch out to other areas (hopefully The Bay ;p)!

Ha, I love the names of the cafe and these salsas! They both sound worthy of trying and that's awesome that they go to a great cause.
