A few months ago I told you about an independent artist from Wisconsin - Tony Memmel. Since his last project "Here We Go", Memmel has purchased his owwn recording equipment so that he could work on new music anytime of day. This has led to too many songs to include on his next record scheduled for a release next year. To satisfy the demand for new music, he decided to release a 6 song EP to hold fans over until the next album. The EP features Tony and his wife, Lesleigh Memmel, along with friend Brian Farvour on percussion. Please remember that every song was written, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Memmel in his apartment - a true feat by any artist. The editing on this CD causes you to go into a different world when you listen to the almost dreamy sounds coming from the album.
"Burnt Bridges" - Is just one of the songs that shows Memmel's explicit editing skills. He is able to blend a mixture of keyboards, guitar, two voices and a simple drum in the background to build up to climactic harmonies that are as if a choir had gotten into the recording studio. The editing is not the only great thing about this song, however. The simplicity of the lyrics are only that of great writers. "These lies were built on sand, when we made our last stand, you flicked me like a cigarette" "I'm on my guard all the time" are just a few of the lines showing simple writing, but the deeper meaning behind them brings out the whole song.
"Our First Vacation" - This song documents the events on a couples first vacation. Starting at home in Wisconsin headed south through Chicago and the drive along the way. Anyone who has taken a road trip can relate to the feeling of the joy in the car ride and feelings that Tony is able to convey through this song. The backing vocals and guitar only add to the amazing vocals that Tony is able to put on the track.
I highly recommend looking up this great independent artist! I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed in his music. All three of his CDs and this EP are equally amazing. I cannot wait to see how he is able to build on this masterpiece with his album next year.
