Fun and good wine in SLO country at Kelsey See Canyon Vineyards

     If wine tasting and vineyards are your thing... then you must take the trip up to San Luis Obispo to Kelsey See Canyon Vineyards. The drive alone is worth it... from So Cal it's a scneic 3 - 3:30 hour drive up California 101 and 1 where vineyards sparsely populate the highways once you pass Santa Barbara. After you've parked and opened the car door, the scents of oak, earth, florals, and fruit orchards tease your nostrils to the extent of sneezing; as if making room for fresh scents. But that's where the scenery  ends and the tasting begins.

We arrived on a day where the winemaker invited fellow tasters to try fresh wines in the barrel. The barrel samplings were fresh, young wines that will be ready in another eight to ten months depending on the style if wine.The bottled wines for their regular tasting were very delicious and ranged from light and fruity to full-bodied and peppery.

But the most unique wine included a fruit indigenous to the area... apples. Although I don't particularly go for the very fruity wines, this apple chardonnay was a nice refreshing, crisp wine with an apple flavor that only augmented the smooth chardonnay. And I had plenty of this one, from the barrel and from the big steel containers outside after chatting with the winemaker for a bit. He's a grey-bearded, bright-eyed, rustic man with a lively sense of describing the wine-making process. Not only is he prominent winemaker in the area, he's an avid surfer at nearby Avila beach. There were two dogs roaming about that also made for fun drinking companions as well; after we found out one of them had a particular taste for spilled wine, but only a certain kind of wine.

The syrahs, chardonnays, cabs, sauvignon blancs, surf-chat all made the trip to the vineyard one to remember. And yes, I do recommend any of the nearby hotels, bed and breakfasts after a day of wine tasting in the area.

Whoa, that apple Chardonnay sounds unique and delicious.  That's neat that you got to meet the winemaker, sample young wine from the barrel, and drink with a couple pooches!  Looks like I'm going to be checking out Kelsey See the next time I'm around SLO :)

Nice review, you persuaded me to take the drive too. I am always up for a good adventure- and good wine? A plus!

Yeah this was a new one for me too. a little off the beaten path but worth it.

If you're looking for good wine, good scenery and a good time tasting, I recommend Kelsey See Canyon Vineyards in Avila Beach of San Luis Obispo County.    The drive out to the tasting room and winery is beautiful. When you arrive, it's instantly obvious that you haven't arrived at a fancy Napa-style winery.
