Better steak at better restaurants.

I'm not a fan of Outback Steakhouse. Don't get me wrong; whenever you want a consistently decent steak, Outback is a good option.

Personally, however, I prefer non-chain steakhouses because they have more character, it seems. I enjoy visiting steakhouses in many cities that reflect the local culture. Outback replicates a single theme at every restaurant, be it in California or in Florida.

Additionally, I don't particularly care for their service. I've been to three locations, and each failed to impress me. I guess the company doesn't stress much in terms of customer satisfaction through warm, friendly staff. It seems like they're more impressed with just sitting you down, taking your order, bringing your food, and finally your check. They hardly even dish out the standard, "Is there anything I can help you with?"

Finally, until very recently, Outback was one of just a handful of national chain restaurants to refuse to disclose nutrition information for its menu items. I wonder why? It seems logical that everyone who eats at a steakhouse knows what they're getting themselves into, so why feel like you need to hide nutritional information? Thankfully, many states (including California) will soon require many chain restaurants to display nutritional information on the menu.

In case you're wondering, no, I don't have a list of favorite items from Outback. I normally list my favorites in reviews of other places, but Outback no longer carries the one item that drew me back each time: the "Bloomin' Onion." I guess when they finally revealed nutrition info, they had to discontinue this one because it was so calorie-heavy.

All in all, their food isn't bad but I simply prefer eating at places with more character and with more friendly staff.

Where in LA do you live? If you're within a reasonable drive of Pasadena, I'd check out Arroyo Chop House off So. Arroyo Pkwy and California Blvd. It's pricey but worth it. You can even take the Metro Gold Line up from Union Station and get off at Fillmore; it's a short walk from there.

I recently acquired a taste for steak. I live in LA and am surrounded by steakhouses, but I am unsure where to go. ANY recommendations for me, even if it's a chain?

Love Chocolate Thunder from Down Under for dessert, but recommend at LEAST 2 people split it! Maybe 3 or 4, it's huge!

I've been a fan of Outback Steakhouse for years. Even though I live in Texas, it is still hard to find a decent steak around my house. If I'm not in the mood for beef, I can always go for one of their smothered chicken dishes. No, it's not the healthiest choice, but we all deserve a little treat now and then.       Yummy food aside, what makes Outback Steakhouse so popular in my house is that they offer a gluten-free menu! My three-year-old son has Celiac Disease and is on a …
