TJ's Cheese Curds: Squeaky Delicious Cheese!

I've been seeing these Wisconsin cheddar cheese curds at Trader Joe's for a while now, but I never thought about trying them until I had poutine for the first time recently and learned that they're only made with cheese curds.  Granted poutine is made with white cheddar cheese curds, the orange ones are just as good.

These TJ's cheese curds are the first unprepared cheese curds that I've ever had, so I don't have anything else to guage my rating scale of cheese curds on.  What I can say, though, is that they're the springiest cheese that I've ever bitten into.  And its little curd shape is cute, too, and the perfect size for popping into your mouth for a snack.  Flavor wise, it taste just like any other cheddar cheese I've ever had.

Like most kinds of foods, cheese curds are best eaten fresh.  If consumed within the first 12 hours after production, they apparently make a squeaking sound against the teeth when bitten down on, a sound which has been described as almost like rubbing two balloons together.  Hence the reason why they're occasionally referred to as "squeaky cheese".

TJ's cheese curds are fresh, but they're not that fresh.  That's alright though; I don't know of any cheese factories around me, so I'm willing to settle!  On the label, it actually suggests that "To bring out the 'squeak' in these curds, microwave for 5-10 seconds until warm, but not melted".  I've tried that and it doesn't squeak like two cuddling balloons, but I still love the warmed up cheese taste and texture.

My favorite way to eat them so far is on their own, or atop a slice of rustic baguette.  Microwaved slightly, of course.  So good!  I might just have to make my own poutine with them one of these days and I'm also feeling awfully tempted to get adventurous and melt them into one of my favorite TJ's products... TJ's frozen mac 'n cheese

That would be dangerous ;D
