Foursquare Twitter game makes being a scenester a trackable, competitive sport

Love the idea of a large social game via mobile, love that's it a way to let you know where your friends are. Love that you can compete with friends to show off how often you go out to cool places and what a scenester you are! But I don't like that many places (at least the ones I frequent) haven't been added to their database of establishments. Right now it's user inputed, which means there's a bunch of mispellings and other errors. While I'm sure the database will grow over time, I think they could have scrapped Yelp or Citysearch for locations and addresses so users wouldn't have to input it themselves. It's a chore to type in the street address is a restaurant or bar. Wish you could either import it from your address book or have it sync with iPhone maps somehow, where when you look up an establishment, you can either add it to your phone book or Foursquare.

Note: Foursquare is from one the creators of Dodgeball (bought by Google last year), an early location based service that would text you when friends (or friends of friends) were nearby or at the same establishment (restaurant or bar) as you. Dennis Crowley was also involved with creating Pac Manhattan, the real life Pac Man tag game from a few years back...which I actually played!

Oooooh, so this is what you were talking about! I can see how manually inputting data can be a pain, but it sounds neat otherwise!

it'd be super fun for you since you go to a lot of cool places, and then I can look at my twitter feed and say, "I wish I was having as much fun as devora!" ;) some people think it'll replace twitter since it's actually more useful in tell you where people actually are as opposed to just what they're thinking, link, RTing etc.

Haha!  Maybe I should get in on the fun!  I'll first need an iPhone though.  It's weird, but I know of two other web start ups in San Francisco whose main concept is... this.  Except one of them is slightly more high tech and will be able to track your every move like a GPS, but that sounds kind of stalkerish!

A Way-Too-Addicting GeoLocation-Based App
When I heard about the concept of foursquare several months before I purchased my first smartphone, I knew that this mobile app was right up my alley.  I was already a twitterholic and tweeting my activities and whereabouts on the go, so how cool would it be if there were an app that could document this for me?  Furthermore, there's a little competitive spirit in foursquare in that you can become "mayor" of the places that you visit the most, and you have the ability to add friends …

Why do I use this thing?
Foursquare is not the first geolocating app to surface, but it seems to have gotten more of a foothold than some of the others. I had another called Loopt on my iPhone for a bit, but it's just no fun when it's just two of you pinging each other back and forth.       Somehow Foursquare's points for checking in, badges of honor and made-up Mayor status has helped make this app stick. Add all that to the integration with Facebook and Twitter, and I think Foursquare is going to be …

After playing with both services for a better part of the conference, I think it's pretty clear who the clear winner is.  Check out my review of the services here.

I like foursquare because it brings an element of play to my day - favorite part is battling the husband for the mayorship of the house =)

I'm not digging @foursquare's new colors. It looks all boy'ish now. Please bring the purple back!

About this game

Wiki

Foursquare is a location-based social networking website, software for mobile devices, and game. Users "Check-in" at venues using text messaging or a device specific application. They are then awarded points and sometimes "badges." The service was created by Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai; Crowley had previously founded the similar project Dodgeball which Google bought and shelved in 2009.

Foursquare allows registered users to connect with friends and update their location. Points are awarded on weekends and non-business hours for "checking in" at venues. Users can choose to have their Twitter accounts updated when they check in. In version 1.3 of their iPhone application, Foursquare enabled push-notification of friend updates, which they call "Pings." Users can earn badges by checking in at locations with certain tags or for check-in frequency. The company has stated that users will be able to add their own custom badges to the site in the future. If a user has checked-in to a venue more than anyone else, on separate days, and they have a profile photo, they will be crowned "Mayor" of that venue, until someone else earns the title. Users can create a "To Do" list for their private use and add "Tips" to venues that other users can read.

Foursquare is now available worldwide.

Foursquare currently has iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry applications and is working on an application for the Palm ...
