So many times her lines were, "I don't know what is happening"

  • Nov 8, 2010

The Chief Medical Officer of the Enterprise arguably has to be the best "seat-of-the-pants" medical person in the Federation. No person is more likely to encounter and have to treat alien life forms or have to treat humans for bizarre and unexpected ailments. Yet Beverly is routinely placed in situations where she is at least initially clueless and instead of giving a preliminary report with some intelligent words included, she says, "I don't know" a lot. With Dr. McCoy, it was clear that his comments about his situation, "I'm a doctor, not an -----" were nothing but bluster. In the episode "Devil in the Dark" he first complains about having to treat the Horta yet within minutes he has a solution and saves its' life. For these reasons I grew to dislike Beverly Crusher as a character and applauded the few times when she showed strength and immediate mental agility.

Nice write up. Beverly was such wasted potential it was sad. One of my favorite episodes, "remember me" was about her and it was great.

I agree, in my review of this episode on Amazon I comment on how refreshing it was to see her act so capable.

The more I thought about Doctor Crusher, the more I realized how few episodes the good Dancing Doctor had.  Everyone talks about Troi not getting much screen time or as much character development but when Troi had an episode where she was the center of attention, then the episode would usually at least be good.  I can think of four episodes out of the 178  where Crusher is the central character, those being "Higher Ground", "Remember Me", "Suspicions" …
Quick Tip by . May 29, 2010
Almost ignored completely in the movies and has fewer episodes considering the screen time she gets.
