Yeoman Janice Rand

Star Trek character. Jim Kirk's personal Yeoman. A bit of a dimwit at times.

"I told her extra sugar in the coffee and she put Necco wafers in it"

Short of Chapel, the only female on the Enterprise was Uhura as a major character and the term major is used loosely, the creators must have felt that a little more sex appeal could be needed.  Uhura \was quite the honey especially in season 1 but for a little extra energy, another female was added in as Kirk's own Yeoman, Janice Rand.

Rand is more sad then anything when you really think about it.  Rand was only a supporting character in the first season of Trek and only in the early episodes.  Being the 60's she was usually objectified severely when she did show up and it also didn't help that she was a typical "dumb blonde".  The title I gave Rand above may be trite, but it might have been along the same lines of something she might say or do.

Rand was a looker to be sure with the mini skirt and beehive hair but that was largely the limits of her appeal.  It was also her downfall for the actress.

I don't dig into the actresses in these roles but with Rand it's almost a given since it's what most people think of when they see her.  Grace Lee Whitney the actress who played Rand developed an addiction to diet pills to stay in shape to squeeze into those quaint costumes.  This lead to drinking and absense from the show during shoots which sadly led to her termination and having scripts rewritten that had her character.  Years later after being homeless and being a prostitute, Grace did get work again when Star Trek: The Motion Picture came out and made appearances in other Trek movies including my favorite The Undiscovered Country where the Rand character went from Kirk's coffee go getter to being Captain Sulu's communications officer.  Sadly her dim nature remained when she asks Sulu if they report the Klingon Moon's destruction to Starfleet.  Uh...........yeah!

Yeah that was ugly but thankfully most things have a happy ending and this is one of them.  Rand was mostly looks but if you didn't mind some dumb blonde humor she was okay.  She even proved why Starfleet leaves phasers in it's galley.  For heating the coffee when the power is out!  Don't forget the Necco wafers.

It was fortunate that the character of Janice Rand  was of short duration. It was clear that she was to be Kirk's love interest but the series was so much stronger when the Enterprise became Kirk's true love. Roddenberry admits that he felt the show was stronger after she was gone and I find it impossible to disagree with that. The dynamic Kirk as an unattached woman chaser was a more effective character in the context of the late sixties.   …

I wish she'd stuck around a little longer in the series. Wasted potential for this character!

A pretty young thing on board the Enterprise who sadly was canned after a few episodes. Dumb blonde comic relief.
