It was fortunate that the character of Janice Rand was of short duration. It was clear that she was to be Kirk's love interest but the series was so much stronger when the Enterprise became Kirk's true love. Roddenberry admits that he felt the show was stronger after she was gone and I find it impossible to disagree with that. The dynamic Kirk as an unattached woman chaser was a more effective character in the context of the late sixties.
Short of Chapel, the only female on the Enterprise was Uhura as a major character and the term major is used loosely, the creators must have felt that a little more sex appeal could be needed. Uhura \was quite the honey especially in season 1 but for a little extra energy, another female was added in as Kirk's own Yeoman, Janice Rand.
