Aliens in the Florida Backwoods

  • Feb 12, 2010

ALTERED is the latest horror flick from director Eduardo Sanchez who also co-wrote the film with Jaime Nash. You may remember Sanchez as half the team who brought you the highly successful BLAIR WITCH PROJECT.  Unlike its predecessor, ALTERED doesn't really break any new ground but it does hit the ground running.

The film opens promisingly with three very nervous good ol' boys stalking through the Florida backwoods; Otis, Cody, and Duke. We quickly learn that they are huntin' aliens and have been for the past 15 years, ever since they and 2 of their friends were abducted, experimented upon, and one of them died--his body never to be seen again. As I said a very promising beginning, and the film holds together extremely well for the first third or so until the buddies, who have now gathered at the isolated fortress home of Wyatt (the other survivor) start bickering over what to do with the alien they finally managed to bag.  It's at this point that things start to fall apart and the film becomes tedious and cliched.  Plot holes abound, illogic runs amok, and a couple of times we have to ask ourselves WTF?

Still there is enough good here to put this at a 3  star rating. The monster is rather impressively designed and executed and has the most  impressive set of chompers I've seem in a long time. Some of the actors are quite good too I especially liked Mike C. Williams as Otis (Williams also appeared in BLAIR WITCH as one of the 3 film students) and Brad William Henke as Duke is a loveable ol' redneck if there ever was one. For those who are into that sort of thing, there's also one really good gore scene that should make almost anyone wince. And The Package left on a man's doorstep at the end of the film is worth a giggle too.

It had its moments but I thought it sort of fell apart after the first act.

I've seen this movie around the store but for some reason, I never picked it up 'coz I've been so disappointed with American horror. I'll give it a look, 3 stars is a pretty decent rating for me. Nice one, Queenie.

For me 3 can cover a lot of ground because on the 1-5 scale it's average. It can be tolerable or just short of really good.

Average. Just average. See 'em all day long. But then I realized just how much ground 3 really covers so I started going back and doing a little decimal work. But this one is really a 3.

From one of the guys who brought us BLAIR WITCH, but it's not nearly as good. A bunch of backwoods buddies have been trying to track down the aliens who inconsiderately abducted them one night. The object is payback. But things don't go quite the way they envisioned them.

A group of rednecks go alien hunting. Otis, Cody, and Duke manage to bag one of the beasties and take it to Wyatt's house. Why? Evidently, all four were victims of the aliens in the past, including Cody's brother Timmy who was killed during the early encounter. Otherwise, its never explained why they bagged this bad boy or why they brought it alive over to Wyatt's.     Wyatt's girlfriend Hope is not amused. She calls the sheriff. Wyatt has some sort of relationship with these …
