A real sob story!

Pros: Beautifully sad

Cons: Long and very very depressing

Be prepared to weep for this dark and depressing and yet inspiring movie.
Just when you think it can't get any worse, it does and does again.

The story of a hopelessly distraught Irish Catholic family who sinks deeper and deeper into misery with every day. The scenery is stark and almost every scene is one of a torrential downpour. The poor family loses member after member due to illness, malnourishment, and disease. The whole movie is simply a downer.

But...there are many moments where you simply have to laugh, which I think is the point that not matter what happens you can still find hope and humor.

It's hard to say who would enjoy this sort of film, certainly not a date movie or one for children. Perhaps those who loved the book will enjoy this movie.
