A strange film about the catholic faith from Abel Ferrara.

Bad Lieutenant has to be one of Abel Ferrara's most misunderstood film. The movie's filled with Catholic guilt and soul searching. It's about a corrupt soul seeking a way to find redemption and to enter the after world with a clear conscience. Made for nearly next to nothing, Abel Ferrara and Harvey Keitel make one of the most moving films you'll ever see.

Harvey Keitel stars as the title character. A corrupt police officer who dwells in his excesses. A man who has hit rock bottom and tries to go even further. But by chance, he comes across a Catholic Nun who was savagely raped by two former altar boys. This enrages the Bad L.T. who has more problems of his own to deal with. After meeting with the Nun, she forgives them because it's what she's been taught and what she believes in her heart. After hearing the Nun's response , it drives the Bad L.T. crazy because he believes that they should get just punishment but she to name the suspects. The meeting with the Nun stirs deep hidden religious feelings within the Bad L.T. After having an enlightning experience with the Almighty and his son, the Bad L.T. tries to do the right thing so he can find salvation for his soul. All the while his little world that he created collapses from his past sins and vices.

Abel Ferrara directs a film that he knows how to do. A gritty street level cinematic experience. There are no expensive set pieces or flashy wardrobes or special effects. It's as if Abel Ferrara is taking you on a guided trip through the deeps of a corrupt person who has a flicker of a conscience deep inside. Be forewarned because it is a rough ride and only for those who can stomach the material. The song at the end will stick around in your head for awhile. A fitting end to a great movie such as this.

Bad Lieutenant
'Bad Lieutenant' is about a nameless police lieutenant and his degenerate lifestyle. The movies starts with him dropping his sons off at school, then snorting coke in the school parking lot before beginning his day. The storyline is a basically loose, as far as plot, the film consists mostly of scenes of the lieutenant's degeneration. The major plot of the movie is a new crime he's assigned to; the destruction of a catholic church along with the raping of one of the nuns. (Warning - the scene is …
