My name is Daryl and I'm an addict

Pros: A story needed telling

Cons: addiction - a crime

Wow! What a powerful film. Clean and Sober , similar to When a Man Loves a Woman , takes you inside the cluttered mind of addiction. Doesn't matter what the addiction is - the mind is always cluttered.

Daryl Poynter is a real estate agent forced to face the Hell that has become his life. Addicted to alcohol, cocaine and gambling, Poynter dips into the company funds to offset his dirty little habits. A practice that does not bring the promised results. Out cruising one night - high and out of control - he brings a bimbo home and she in turns O.D.'s in his bed. Running from the police, he checks into a treatment center - not for the treatment of course, because HE doesn't have a problem - but for the anonymity they offer.

Even suffering through the throes of detoxification, Poynter is seen trying to score over the phone. Overheard by his counselor, Craig, who has seen it all and done most of it, he forces him to look deep into himself. During his healing process, he meets and falls in love with co-addict, Charlie Standers, who is both addicted to cocaine and an abusive relationship.

In the end he is fired from his job and accused of murder (the bimbo) but remains Clean and Sober.

Now, my husband was an alcoholic and a drug user, so I am aware of the dependency and deception these people go through on a daily basis. This film gave real insight into the pathetic lives addict live. Myself, I am addicted to caffeine and nicotine. Just as abusive and lately, darn near as expensive.

It was terrifying to watch - as they say in AA First the man takes a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes the man . Never more evident than in this story, or in When a Man Loves a Woman, an equally powerful movie. All actors involved gave outstanding performances, very believable.

Michael Keaton - Daryl Poynter; Kathy Baker - Charlie Standers (ha! Thought it was a guy didn't you?); Morgan Freeman - Craig
