As had already been proven by her appearance on the TV show Glee, it is clear that Gwyneth Paltrow can sing...I mean REALLY sing...not just make a show of it. I didn't go into this movie with high expectations because the critics hadn't been very kind, and perhaps that was a good thing--I actually enjoyed it a good bit more than I'd expected. Paltrow is good, if stereotypical, as Kelly, a beloved country singer whose alcoholism threatens to destroy both her career and her marriage. The characters played by Leighton Meester and Garret Hedlund are helpful in lightening things up so that there is a balance of sweet/funny and sad/tragic. Tim McGraw was perhaps best of all in his role as Kelly's husband and manager. While I am not a big country music fan, I really enjoyed the songs.
Star Rating: Country Strong is a fairly reliable celebrity drama, although it’s not particularly original and it would have worked a lot better were it not for an unearned, shamelessly soapy ending. Country Strong (formerly titled Love Don't Let Me Down) is an upcoming drama film about a country singer named Kelly Canter. It stars Gwyneth Paltrow as Kelly Canter and Garrett Hedlund as Beau Williams and is directed by American filmmaker Shana Feste. It is set for limited release on December 22, 2010 and a nationwide release on January 7, 2011.
