Don't waste your time. Fortunately, I'd read the book before seeing the movie, so I am not turned off of the series.

It's amazing to me how truly awful this movie turned out. I guess so many studios were in a rush to capitalize on the success of the "Harry Potter" and "The Lord of the Rings" franchises that they didn't take enough time to evaluate the script, the cast, or the director to ensure that the film would be any good. Even the special effects seemed sub-par in comparison to other fantasy films that came out around that time.
I've yet to read the books and honestly I'd be lying if I said that my hesitation has a lot to do with the film and its overall predictability. Are the books more fleshed out?

God, yes! The first book isn't spectacular, but it's certainly infinitely better than the movie. The following two novels are better than the first. Paolini definitely matures as a writer through the series. I know why you would hesistate after seeing the movie, but it really is a horrible representation of Paolini's work. I would really suggest trying to put it out of your mind and give the novels a chance. They're really entertaining.

Eragon: A textbook example of wasted potential.
Dragons can be a bit of a downer for movies. It seems that many films Dragons are involved in end up turning out badly. It is worrying, then, that Eragon may be the worst Dragon-fuelled multiplexer yet. The book by Christopher Paolini was, in my opinion, quite an enjoyable and well written piece of literature. The film, on the other hand, is uninspired, dull, and far-fetched.   Here's a quick summary of the plot (don't worry, no major plot spoilers). Eragon is a young farm boy …

Who do they think they are?
Warning, may contain spoilers, but if you've seen Star Wars it's okay you'll see them coming anyway.       The are no words to describe the anger, the unadulterated fury, the blinding rage, that I felt while I watched this sorry excuse for a film. Literally every shot in here is copied and pasted from one movie or another, whether it be Dragonheart - Collector's Edition or Braveheart or their two favorite sources The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Platinum …

They took a long and detailed book   And cut out all the frills   This movie's just a summary   Of Alagaësia's ills     It doesn't build the characters   There's too much plot left out   You just don't get the feel of what   The book is all about     A boy, an egg, his destiny   To fly on dragon's wings   It tries too hard to be a clone   Of THE Lord of the Rings      …

Eragon is based on the novel by the same name by author Christopher Paolini. The film is about a young teen farmer who lives in a land controlled by an evil king named Galbatorix (John Malkovich). The story goes that there was a time when men and dragons fought together and Galbatorix betrayed his people and killed all the dragons and most of their riders. Now an unborn dragon named Saphira falls into the hands of young Eragon. The two are destined for each other to take out Galbatorix. So this …

This movie features one incredible character! He's unbelievably sexy, intelligent, quick-witted, fast on his feet, more than able to swing a sword or shoot an arrow. He's everything you would want in a movie hero!    His name is Murtagh, and sadly he's basically just a low-level sidekick.    The actual "hero" of this movie is named Eragon. He's a pathetic little creature. Arrogant, self-centered, obnoxious, annoying, oblivious and generally just awful.     …

This movie is based on the first book of a three-series trilogy inspired by the LOTR movies. I have not read any of the books, and will only comment on the movie as a stand-alone piece of work. The strongest impression I had of this movie is the amatuerish feel of everything, including the dialogue, acting, action scenes, story line, and soundtrack.     First, the dialogue was simple and boring, full of short sentences and seemed to be ripoffs from other movies. For example, …

Reading over a few of the reviews of this film I noticed one major difference between those who enjoyed the movie and those who, well, hated it. Folks who read the book this film is based on generally seemed to regard this film as an atrocity. Those people who didn't read the book (such as myself) either really enjoyed the movie or thought it was a mediocre film at best. I happened to really enjoy the film. It isn't the greatest fantasy flick to ever grace the silver screen but, then again, most …

ERAGON is not without its flaws - a weak and corny script, shoddy editing, Swiss cheese story line - but it is also not without some charm. Unfortunately it is in competition with the Harry Potter series, Lord of the Rings, etc etc that seem to flow endlessly out of Hollywood and the foreign markets.    The story of a young lad finding a 'jewel' that turns out to be the egg from which a dragon hatches, offering the chance to reestablish dragon flying and the defeat of an evil …
