I once thought the Excel Saga anime was one of the most insane things I ever saw. Excel Saga has at least some semblance of grounded story at times and you can make sense out of it. To make sense out of FLCL, you need something from the peddler down the streets, or you simply CLAIM to know whats going on when in fact you don't.
Aliens, pulling guitars out of peoples heads, cell phones that eat other cell phones, wild gun battles where I don't think anyone dies and a very strange woman on a scooter. If Aqua Teen Hunger Force was an anime, it would be FLCL.
FLCL has a weird balance of action, drama, sci fi and comedy. If Repo Man was an anime and slammed a case of energy drinks, it would be FLCL.
I don't hate the show, but it's carefree with the weird and hyper make it hard to follow and truly enjoy. The sound quality and mixing is good, the soundtrack is good and when things are calm enough the show looks nice. It's only when the sugar high in this show starts that it gets to be funny but strangly loses it's appeal. If a 6 year old with hyperactivity were an anime, it would be FLCL.
Or, as one of those motivational posters would say
FLCL We dare you.
