A Quick Tip by djevoke
Thank GOD for Redbox and that I only spent $1 on this. I'm a sucker for dance movies...sometimes this is good (Step Up franchise, Flashdance, DIrty Dancing) and sometimes this is bad. This remake definitely falls under the latter. Supposedly the lead Ren (Kenny Wormald) is a professional dancer and was JT's back-up dancer and we all know Julianne Hough from her Dancing With The Stars performances. I couldn't tell that they were professionals AT ALL. She just ended up doing a mix of shit kicking and grinding while he...well, I can't quite describe it. They had a black character that was supposed to represent hip-hop (I know, don't get me started...) but, couldn't have been further off than the hip-hop dancing that mainstream movie audiences have grown accustomed to seeing on the big screen. Overall, I wasn't impressed.
The back story was the same as the original Footloose, in my memory with the town outlawing dancing and blah blah blah. That part, of course, was decent. The dancing was abominable except for one cutesy line dancing scene that was two seconds long. But, the original Footloose with Kevin Bacon (who wasn't a professional dancer and did a MUCH better job than the alleged professional in this remake) was far better than this one. Yes, it didn't have dance battles or a super deep plot but, it was relevant, the music fit the era it was filmed, and it was a fun movie to watch.
The adults in the movie (Dennis Quaid, Andie MacDowell, the guy who played Ren's boss and the prinicipal) were all decent. They all played their respective roles well and helped to hold up this movie or at least they tried. But, at the end of the day, a dancing movie needs to have impressive dance scenes and give the audience something fun and new. This one did neither of those things. I definitely DO NOT recommend this one!
