Tarrentino in His Element

  • Jul 13, 2010
Death Proof is a must watch for action enthusiasts if only for the final car chase.  I have seen many great car chases in my time, from The French Connection to Ben Hur (Yes the chariot race counts!) but there is something about the final car chase in Death Proof that literally has you holding your breath and your seat.  Maybe its the fact that a woman is on the hood of the car with nothing but gloves to help her hold on.  Maybe it's the gorgeous classic cars.  Maybe its the fact that it's Kurt Russel against a car load of strong women.  Most likely it's the thrilling combination complete with gripping music and perfect camera angles.

Death Proof is a simple yet gruesome plot.  Stuntman Mike spends his time following groups of women only to track them down in his souped up engine and kill them.  The voyeurism with which Mike watches the women is enough to make a feminist scream, but there is something about Tarrentino's style that creates strong women who answer to no one that makes me wonder if he isn't something of a new kind of feminist.  It's no surprise that in the end Stuntman Mike gets his, and the first half of the flick tends to wane, but that twenty minute car chase makes it all worth watching again and again.

Agreed. Kurt Russell is great as always. However, I have to say Jackie Brown is my fave of QT's films.

The second half of the first part is a good short film; the rest I can do without.

I love Quentin Tarantino, and I love the fact that in any one of his movies where there is a female role, her legs are shown more than her face (or so it seems) :)
