I saw plenty of emotion and dispair over this quest -- the scenes with the radio could have been better, I admit. In the book the radio broadcasts were from a radical wizard group trying to undermine Voldemort's reign, (reminded me of Radio Free Europe's broadcasts into Nazi-controlled Germany).
In fact a lot of the film was a commentary on fascism ("Magic is Might") and a dictatorial controlled society (the Ministry court system). There were so many important themes running through the film, yet your review mentions nothing of these.
Minus-one was pretty harsh, mate. Still, well-written review.
I also do not gloss over the more mature themes and do what I can to praise the darkness the film maintains throughout.
I opted not to say anything about the WWII themes because I found them extremely heavy handed but they were consistent throughout. But mainly, I didn't want to have the fight with other reviewers because that part of my opinion was more unpopular than the rest.
David Yates is, I think, doing his best to walk the very fine line that HP requires. We must not forget that the books are primarily for young adult audiences. Those truly understanding the sweep of the last 2 novels are going to be older but they are still intended to be young adults. So the film must appeal to them first. I think by trying to balance the two audiences he makes some very poor pacing choices.
I cannot disagree more about the acting quality. All involved did better in Azkaban under a much stronger director who also misunderstood the age involved (it is a far darker film than I think most of the audience expected). And they all did a better job in Mr. Yate's first attempt in Order of the Phoenix.
The kindest thing I can say is also my largest hope: since we were all going to see part 1 no matter what then they can skimp on quality and put forth all of the true effort into part 2 to make it a truly good movie. My fingers are crossed.
However, I do have to take issue with your last comment. Not only have I read and reviewed the novel, I say so in the main review.
