How Do You Know? Well, you don’t! No one does until it’s out there in the open and had undergone “stress” test. "Big stars, big budgets" does not necessary equate success nor does it guarantees mega box office. In fact, this turns out to be one of the biggest flops in the movie industry!

Reese Witherspoon, Jack Nicholson + Owen Wilson = US$37 million paycheck. Add Paul Rudd into the equation that translates to a whopping US$40 million! Now, you’d wonder what kind of movie requires the concerted talents of US$40 million and then another $10 million for director James Brooks who also happened to write and produce the film. After a tax rebate of some $20 million, total cost amounted to $100 million. Intakes grossed some $42.8 million worldwide that means a loss of a whopping $57.2 million!

At a time when the world is still recovering from the blow of a financial tsunami, $120 million which may not mean much for some people seemed to me a total waste of resources. The story is not extraordinary, nor is it that meaningful. It takes a lot more talents to just make a good movie. This one is simply not it. Scripting isn’t great, story seems meaningless and actors are not adding anything to a story where there probably hasn’t much to add to it! It makes one questions why make a movie simply for the sake of making one? And it shows when there just isn’t a solid theme to it. In fact, it portrays the degeneration of the moral attitude of this generation rather than how you know when you’re in love! I think most people know when they are in love, they don’t need to watch a movie that costs some $120 million to make to know it! That’s it. A silly waste of money which could have been spent more wisely instead of just paying some individuals to make a movie that needn’t be made!

Granted, if you’re a big fan of any of the lead perhaps it’s worth your few bucks. I paid very little to watch the movie but I still didn’t feel it’s worth the loss of my time!

*1/2 out of ****     There's very little harm, and very little charm, to James L Brook's "How Do You Know". It's a comedy that doesn't offend, it's not too crude, and it's not stupid. Great, that's wonderful. But it also doubles as a drama; one that does not work, does not involve the audience, or so much as stimulate one's intellect. This film wasn't an insult to my intelligence, but it expects the audience to WANT to be played like a deck of cards. This film also plays like …
