How To Find a Man, Catch His Heart, Then Dump Him In Ten Days!

  • Sep 26, 2003
Pros: A light-hearted romance filled with fun and laughs.

Cons: The first part of the movie was very slow moving.

The Bottom Line: This movie left me feeling happy, I definitely recommend it.

I must admit that when I watched this movie for the very first time, it was not holding my full attention. One main reason for that was because they did not have any music playing until after they established the stars of the show and what type of work that they did. So it did have a slow start by my standards. The main reason I wanted to see this movie is because I love romantic comedies. When I heard that Goldie Hawn's daughter, Kate Hudson was starring in this film, I just had to see it! Kate portrayed Andie Anderson, a graduate from a prestigous college, who had a dream to be a great writer. Her first job was with The Composure Magazine where she only got to write about small features and she desperately wanted a chance to prove she could write well enough to be able to write her own personal articles. Annie took on her bosses request for her to write a feature article on "How To Lose A Guy in Ten Days".

The next scene of this movie features Matthew McConaughey, who played the part of Benjamin Barry, who is an aspiring ad agency bachelor trying to make his mark in the corporate world. He wants the diamond business account so he can show his boss just how great he is in his job. He has competition with two other female workers that want the same account. So the movie finally takes us to a bar, where Ben is sitting at a table with his boss and his two female coworkers and they tell Ben that he does not know anything about love since he is a bachelor and never dates the same women for very long. Ben promises he can make a commitment to a woman and he even let the female coworkers pick out the girl he must get to fall in love with him. His boss told him that if this girl comes to the big bash for the diamond ad party and tells him that she loves Ben, that he will get the ad account. To keep this story short, Andie, is standing at a bar trying to find a suitable man to get to fall in love with her quickly, so she could then start a diary on how to lose a man in ten days. It was faith that they both met that night and started to date. Neither one was very honest in why they wanted to date each other.

So as the movie goes on, after Andie feels she has hooked Ben, she starts doing all kinds of silly things to get him to get mad at her so she could write her article. Since he was determined he was going to keep her and get her to fall in love with him by the time of his big ad party, he really put up with more than any other man would ever be able to do

One of my favorite scenes is when Andie takes Ben to see the basketball team with great tickets! I think Ben was really beginning to fall for her at this point, why he even kissed her on a skycamera, until.....she started playing her silly games to get him mad at her. In the final few minutes before the game was through, Andie whined and asked Ben to get her a coke with no ice. He barely made it back for the last shot of the game, and she told him it wasn't diet coke. So he goes back to get the diet coke and Andie enjoys the game and then brags to him about what he missed!
She does funny things to him throughout the movie. She calls his mother, visits him at work unannounced, buys him "their baby dog", and even has a scrapbook made of what they children may look like one day. Now this would scare any normal man off, but he needed her to win the ad business.

So you will see Ben making funny faces, say things to himself so he does not lose his temper because he has already made a bet that she will still be with him at the ad party. Now the movies starts to be very funny from this point on. I think she really had more fun trying to dump him. She even went so far as to get a key made of his apartment and bust his regular poker night game!

As the movie goes along, Andie really falls in love with Ben, especially after they spent a weekend with his family and she learned to play "bullsh*t". I do not want to give all of the movie away. I will tell you that there is a very big taxi chase in the final scene which also includes "a love fern". If you want to know what all of this means, you must see the movie. I will admit that I bought the DVD and I watch the movie over quite often. I purposely did not tell you what all happened at the advertising party. There was some silly singing and the rest of the movie unfolded.

If you like comedies and you enjoy cute love scenes with great actors, then I think you will definitely like this one! Thanks for reading!

Matthew McConaughey was kind of sexist in this movie...so I wasn't very impressed...but there were some funny parts.

Entertaining film with strong performances by its leads, but suffers from a formulaic script.

How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days certainly wins laughter points. Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey do compete with each other to satify altier motives. However their characters Andy and Bennie discover that they hae true feelings for each other.    The story does spell contrived in capital letters. Ten days just does not spell romance in a realistic world. However, the comic scenes do draw out much laughter especially when the shrink gets involved and when the couple implodes …

As for all romantic comedies, they are all totally predictable, but this one has some cute/funny twists, and after all these movies start to look the same, any new fresh change is welcome. Kate Hudson, looks and talks like her mother, Goldie Hawn, who was my favorite actress since i was a kid, and she gives of a great performance playing the whacky chick, trying to drive the guy away.   Matthew McConaughey is doing his best to win his part of the bet, while you watch his poor face, you …

About this movie

Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson) decides to spice up her How-To column in Composure Magazine by venturing out into the Manhattan singles market to see if she can make a guy fall for her, and then get him to dump her within 10 days. Simultaneously, advertising executive Benjamin Barry (Matthew McConaughey) makes a bet with his boss that he can meet a woman and have her fall in love with him within 10 days. Naturally the two of them come together, and, oblivious to each other's wagers, they quickly bond. But when Andie turns off her charms and turns on the dumping tactics, Benjamin must do all he can not to be repulsed by her so that he can win his side of the bet. With Andie unable to comprehend why she can't rid herself of her guy, and with Benjamin frustrated at Andie's peculiar behavior, the two of them begin down the inexorable path toward genuine romance.

This charming romantic comedy, based on the book HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS: THE UNIVERSAL DON'TS OF DATING by Michele Alexander and Jeani...
