One of those Charlie Brown Christmas Tree movies

One of the most infamously bad movies of all time for being a bomb at the box office, it's in production ego stories and bad jokes and writing, Hudson Hawk is often laughed at by it's mere mention.  Having now actually seen the movie, I can say that all it needs is a little love and maybe one good solid re-write instead of rewriting it as the movie goes.

A vantiy project for Bruce Willis, this comedy caper movie centers on Willis's character whose nick name is Hudson Hawk who with his partner Tommy can time robberies to old songs and are tasked with working with gangsters and a slimy married business couple named the Mayflowers to steal DiVinci artifacts to replicate an alchemy machine that can turn lead into gold and attempt to ruin the worlds economy.  The CIA is involved, the Vatican is involved and there sure is wackiness involved.

Hudson Hawk isn't great but it does have a charm and appeal that I can appreciate.  If this movie worked, I could have seen sequels with more songs, heists and situations to get and out of and for all we know, they could have polished up the comedy aspects so that the movies jokes work better.  What I cannot appreciate are the rewrites that are very obviously done on the fly while the movie was shot, bad and dated humor such as Hawk commenting on goat cheese on a pizza and "a lot of Wong numbers" in a phonebook and in many scenes, particularily the Mayflowers mugging up a storm worse then Bill Cosby.  Oh and I cannot forget Andie McDowell trying to talk to the dolphins.  Yikes to that scene alone.

The good news is that in spite of how silly this movie is, I found it fun and light.  Bruce Willis and Danny Aiello work great together and when the movie isn't trying to force bad comedy it at least works well as a light action film.  It should have had better comedy, or at least more action.  It didn't need more mugging and bad jokes that's for sure.

Yeah, it just seems like whenever I see it on TV, I am always either too busy or tired to really pay attention to it. I need to make time to just watch it when I want to see it. I bet I'll like it more...

Cat burglar tries to go straight upon getting out of prison but has criminals, gangsters the CIA and the Vatican to worry about pulling him back into his old ways. Not as bad a movie as you've heard but it definitely has issues in it's storytelling and writing.
