FUN VAMPIRE FLICK

I had first seen this movie while living in Maryland years ago and decided one day after Christmas when I had some extra cash that I would go out and buy this flick. I can say now that I am really glad that I did because I find this film to be really good and entertaining. I believe I watched this as soon as I got home and put it into a vampire marathon, this movie, the sequel, all three From Dusk Till Dawn films, and few others. That was probably one of the best days I had just sitting around watching movies, a whole day of vampires, what else could you want? At the end of the marathon I knew I had made a wise decision by buying all these films.

The story is about a team of vampire hunters who are on a hunt and crash a vampire safe house; I guess it was not so safe. After doing so they seem to have made the head vampire who was asleep else were pretty mad, he stormed their party killing most of the team. So the hunt is on from both sides as both parties involved are after the other, add in a pretty young woman who has been bitten who is under the hunters protection and you have a pretty good movie. I think this is at the top of my list as far as an entertaining movie goes from Mr. Carpenter, it is not his scariest but it is a really good time at the movies [or at home, whatever].

James Woods is brilliant as the lead hunter who is out to get revenge on this vampire for his late crew, Woods oozes coolness in this role. Same can be said for Thomas Ian Griffith who was the head vampire; this guy did a great job. He is a very creepy looking vampire and you can believe that he is out for revenge for his late crew. Still I think Danial Baldwin may have been the MVP for this film, if he wasn't he is very close. I think his performance is perfect especially for this type of film.

John Carpenter keeps coming with these fun movies, I still feel his best film ever is HALLOWEEN. But this is a very good ride none the less. Don Jakoby did a very good job adapting the novel by John Steakley into this film, the screenplay must have been great. Of course John directed the film, but James Woods, Thomas Ian Griffith, and Danial Baldwin bring this great story to life. Believe me this movie is great is a fun little get away, Maximilian Walsh also does a great job on this. This is a must have for any true vampire fan.

I don't remember being too thrilled over this one. I might give it another look next month during the horror kick I plan to go on.

Don Jakoby did a very good job adapting the novel by John Steakley into this film, the screenplay must have been great. Of course John directed the film, but James Woods, Thomas Ian Griffith, and Danial Baldwin bring this great story to life. Believe me this movie is great is a fun little get away.

This movie would have been an excellent pilot for an ongoing television series.The concept of an organized group of Vampire hunters, the hard and direct way they do their job and the no-nonsense attitude of James Woods as Jack the head killer would have translated very well to the small screen.The movie itself suffers only from the quick elimination of most of the team. It would seem very unlikely that these "professinals" would be so easily taken.All of the characters are acted well. I've never …

Talk about an opening. The first few minutes of John Carpenter'sVampires--in which James Woods's vampire killer leads a dawn raid on a New Mexico "goon nest" of bloodsuckers--not only suggests a horror movie that will not pull any punches, it even evokes some of the more disturbing dream-memories of American Westerns. Muscular and uncompromised, the sequence suggests a new Carpenter classic unraveling before one's eyes. Well, dream on. Things don't quite work out that way, but this is still a film to reckon with. There are a few serious (and surprising) misjudgments on the director's part, particularly a mishandling of Sheryl Lee's role as a prostitute poisoned by the bite of a "master vampire" (who pretty much wiped out Woods's team of goon terminators). But aside from some weaknesses, the action is jolting, the suggested complicity of the Catholic Church in destroying monsters is provocative, and the traces of Howard Hawks's continuing influence on Carpenter's storytelling are in evidence.--Tom Keogh
