Kaboom' written and directed by Gregg Araki won the Queer Palm award at Cannes last year. That was the first time the award was given out. It's for filmmakers that create movies geared toward the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. This will give you a hint as to where 'Kaboom' ventures to go.

'Kaboom' is a thriller/scifi/mystery about Smith, (Thomas Dekker) an ambisexual 18 year old college freshman who stumbles upon a monstrous conspiracy in a seemingly idyllic seaside Southern California town. Smith's everyday life in college - hanging out with his arty, sarcastic best friend Stella (Haley Bennett), hooking up with a beautiful free spirit named London (the wonderful Juno Temple) lusting after his gorgeous but dim surfer roommate Thor (Chris Zylka) - all gets turned upside-down after one fateful, terrifying night.

Tripping on some hallucinogenic cookies, Smith is convinced he's witnessed the gruesome murder of an enigmatic Red Haired Girl ( Nicole LaLiberte) who has been haunting his dreams. What Smith discovers as he tries to find out the truth, leads him deeper and deeper into a mystery that will forever change not only the course of his life, but the destiny of the entire world.

'Kaboom' takes you to the edge and doesn't bring you back. Gregg Araki loves to push the boundaries of sexuality and this film is no exception. 'Kaboom' isn't for everyone, but if you take the trip you won't be disappointed. As usual the 'Two Jews On Film' do not agree. One of the two Jews (me) gives this film a very high bagel award, the other one...does not. Who do you agree with? Go see the film and let us know. 'Kaboom' is playing in select theaters.

Oh, wow! I love Araki and I've been dying for him to make another film which deviates from the fluffy stuff like Splendor or Smiley Face. This one sounds like something right up my alley. ;-) Hoping we get this and Red State in the local multiplex.

Star Rating:         Watching Kaboom, I was convinced that I was seeing some kind of insane masterpiece, that writer/director Gregg Araki had at last found his voice and was on his way to becoming this generation’s answer to David Lynch. But then came the film’s final fifteen minutes, when everything he had worked for dramatically came crashing down. His mistake, which would be preferable under normal circumstances, was providing an explanation; what begins …
