Cruise And Diaz Shows A Lot of Promise But The Script Blunders All Over....

  • Jun 26, 2010
“Summer Escapist Entertainment” is the exact description for “KNIGHT AND DAY”. The film has loads of potential going for it with two big name stars that promises great chemistry, beautiful scenery, an atmosphere of adventure and voluptuous romance; executed with lots of explosions and stylized action. Well, Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz can always deliver entertaining dynamics to a motion picture, but the problem is, the direction and screenplay just cannot deliver on all the film’s promised potential. For a film like this to succeed, it has be loaded with enough creative stunts, an attitude that swoons the audience with a feeling of adventure and romantic electricity. Thankfully, the film does have the right stars to put people in theater seats, the challenge is in keeping those same people entertained.

June (Cameron Diaz) and Ray (Tom Cruise) bump into each other in Wichita airport, and despite the fact that they are total strangers, the two seem to connect with a powerful chemistry. On the plane while June is freshening up, Ray dispatches some assailants with accurate precision and he is then revealed as an agent who has been accused of going rogue. June ends up being caught in the crossfire as Ray sets out to protect a new self-sustaining battery and its teenage inventor (Paul Dano). June makes her attempts to escape this situation but seems like the more she tries to flee, the more she gets caught deeper into this struggle as Ray becomes constantly hounded by assassins, gunmen and even government agents. She slowly realizes that she has no choice but to try and trust this mystery man; and despite his odd history, she finds herself attracted to him…

“Knight and Day” is a formula film that offers little intricacies in way of its plot. Much of the film relies on the chemistry between Cruise and Diaz; their conversations and the ‘quippy’ one-liners dispersed throughout the film. Aided by the execution of “wow” with grand displays of stunts, the director tries to keep the viewer busy with the film’s energy and brisk pacing. The direction by James Mangold is rather uneven, even when I can see that he had the right idea in certain scenes but he got a little too overzealous in the film’s editing.

The trick in its direction is the fact that it tries to maintain an air of mystery as the film is mostly seen through June’s eyes; so when she passes out then the viewer also misses what happens. June oftentimes gets to pass out just as the film’s sequences were just beginning to get interesting. Sure, it was an attempt to be clever and maybe even ‘cute‘, but you just don’t hide the things that could make or enhance its characters. This element overstayed its welcome after awhile as I it was something that was really overplayed. Instead, the screenplay was reduced to a bungling comedic streak, the comedy could’ve been more effective if we actually were invested in the punch line. However, some scenes do make up for some thrilling moments and the intricate stunts seemed impressive enough so action junkies may be entertained.

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in "Knight and Day."

Tom Cruise is right in the middle of the action as we see cars fly over, Cruise himself gets thrown out of whack amid all the mayhem and collisions. The gunfights are relatively short, or at least short since we get to miss a lot of the action. There was a worthwhile action sequence when Cruise and Diaz were being chased in the streets of Spain; the shots were good and nicely executed. Cruise manages to do his best to generate excitement in the screenplay. Diaz is a charismatic actress and even with this lackluster script she does have her moments; but she does also have her limits and before long, she just ends up squealing and annoying.

The film is at its best when Cruise is at his “hero-savior” mode as he does his own imitation of “incredible” and the “impossible”. But the script is just too messy that even Cruise and Diaz cannot salvage its irritating moments. There was also quite a few missteps as with June’s lack of protestations amid all the mayhem and I became really disappointed every time June passes out. June’s character was a must for the audience to buy into but it was built upon her stupidity and not her strengths; on this, the film fails and ends up being annoying.

The film worked hard to keep the mystery of the battery its main ace but when it does attempt to deliver the climactic finale (every action film has one) it just couldn’t deliver. Sure, you may say that the film never did build up any suspense, so what was the problem? Well, because of Cruise and Diaz I was kept hoping for a grand display of “awesome” and instead I was served the same old thing.

RENTAL [2 ½ Out Of 5 Stars]

Hype Level: Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz always generates a fair amount of Hype. But the film fell short of quality to deliver.

So Tom Cruise's character is accused of "going rogue" huh? I guess he does sort of remind me of Sarah Palin--only she's a bit more macho. I'm feeling a bit silly tonight.
July 05, 2010
now..that's a great joke! LOL!
July 05, 2010
That's not a joke.
June 28, 2010
This one is on my TBW list. Too be honest, the plot doesn't sound that interesting, but I am curious to see how well Cameron and Tom work out together. Thanks so much for the review, William!

Take your time on this one, Adrianna. You should see Toy Story 3 instead. Diaz and Cruise do have a chemistry but I really didn't care much for Diaz's character in the film. Too whiny LOL!
July 02, 2010
(laughs) I'll remember to watch TS3 than first. I'm not sure when the next time I will go to the movies will be, though. Been so busy these days. :-P

Thanks...good review, woo! I just saw this reviewed by two critics on At the Movies last night and boy did they skewer it--said it was worse than Killers, which got AWFUL reviews. But it looks like so much fun...sigh.

Honestly, it wasn't as bad as most people made it out to be; (my 2.5 means fair) but if you do look at it from a viewpoint where you have a huge budget, and two big name stars, it is a HUGE disappointment. I cannot recommend it but it may be a good rental on a boring day. :)
June 27, 2010
Good review I just came back from seeing this and I loved it I know it was pure formula but it just worked so well for me seeing as all the films this summer have been utter atrocities.
June 27, 2010
I'll be looking forward to your review, Lopez, this was your assignment but I was a little bored Thursday night (my TV shows were all re-runs). I guess I am the type of guy who has seen an incredible share of action movies (I mean I've seen an insane amount of action movies) and it takes a lot to impress me. This would have been better if the viewer didn't pass out occasionally along with June. I do have to commend Cruise for doing his own stunts though.
June 26, 2010
I'm not going near this movie. Ever since "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" these stupid romantic comedy/action films have been gaining in popularity. Plus, Cruise annoys me with his Scientology rants, bizarre behavior, and his continual denial of plastic surgery when it's obvious to everyone that he looks ten years younger than he did 15 years ago. Plus, Diaz can't act. Nope, I'll be avoiding this like VD.
June 26, 2010
You are hysterical!! My God, I cracked up reading this! You are SO right on all counts!! LOL  There are not many actors that can pull off a comedy/action, and Cruise is definitely not one of them.  Thanks for the great laugh!!
June 27, 2010
ok, Sean, you read too much celebrity mags LOL! but I have to say, it was obvious Cruise had plastic surgery--his chest looks fake! LOL
June 27, 2010
I don't read any magazines, Woo, you should know that by now. I find them to be full of vapid gossip and unsubstantiated facts. But like you point out, it's obvious.
June 28, 2010
actually I was just messing with you, Orlok. :)
June 28, 2010
And I was just waiting to see if you could tell I was messing with you back by being so serious and snobby about it. Apparently my joke didn't come through as well. LOL!
June 26, 2010
Great review; I was never planning on seeing this one anyway, as Diaz gets on my nerves and I may be the only woman in the world that can't stand Tom Cruise. Don't know what it is about him but I hate him (jumping on Oprah's couch like an idiot didn't help matters any!) - anyway, for those who may have wanted to see this one, your review was fantastic.
June 26, 2010
Me either - actually there are not many female actresses I do like consistently.
June 27, 2010
Not really sure how I feel about Cruise, he has his good moments but this definitely wasn't one of them!
June 28, 2010
Unfortunately I haven't seen many of his good moments I guess; just my opinion; I just get the feeling he's fake and I like "real" men!
June 28, 2010
LOL! I think one of his best roles in the one in "Tropic Thunder" when he wasn't made to look like Cruise LOL!
June 28, 2010
Oh no -- too bad I missed that one! LOL
June 28, 2010
This is Tom Cruise's best roles/scenes:

Have a laugh! LOL!
June 28, 2010
OMG I am SOOO glad I never saw this one!! LOL Thanks for sending me into hysterics! LOL
June 26, 2010
A friend of mine said the trailer basically had all the good parts in it, any way excellent review WP as always good sir.
June 26, 2010
that is so true. The trailer showed the best scenes except for one.

As I expected Knight and Day really fails on almost every level as it attempts to be a romantic-comedy, an action-comedy, and a sexy espionage story. Part of the problem is that the story is so banal and absurd that you can't ever take it seriously, but it's also so dull and unoriginal that it fails to be funny. Neither Tom Cruise (who again plays a dominant male action hero with an over abundance of confidence) nor Cameron Diaz (who again plays a ditzy loud-mouthed woman in the wrong place …

You May ConfuseTom Cruise For 007.
I have been a Tom Cruise fan for quite some time now and I could not wait until this movie came out in DVD, because I was worried about what the critics were saying about this movie. That is why I waited to see it until now, sometimes you should not listen to those critics. This was an amazing action movie with a lot of special effects, adventure, comedy and a thriller all mixed together. This did not last long at the theaters, but that is their bad luck and my good luck, because now I can add this …

Quick answer: sort of.      Knight and Day is that type of film that tries to be a lot of things, and in this case it's an action-comedy-romance and in the end the result is a little watered-down. In fact, director James Mangold opted to use a "drugged first person perspective" technique to short-cut the action sequences and get the story going. This is quite disappointing as the film had an enjoyable opening action sequence.      This star vehicle …

Just watched this movie for the first time, and I'm pretty impressed. I'm a Tom Cruise fan, plus a fan of the action/adventure genre, so this movie was a must see. Good plot, good acting, and basically an all around cool movie.

Let me get this out of the way up front: I'm a Tom Cruise fan. Always have been. Sure, there's been some stinkers over the years playing Nazis, fighting aliens and the debacle w/ Kubrick (Eyes Stay Shut?)--but for the most part I've enjoyed his films because you typically get an entertaining flick featuring a Tom Cruisey-character. And lock, stock and barrel-- that's exactly what's delivered in Knight & Day.      Roy (Cruise) is a dashing, boyish covert …

3 1/2 stars:
In this day and age,  in this era of films  spy movies  are literally a dime a dozen. They are one of the action genres most common uses for  an action/ adventure  picture  and have spawned many franchises, T.V. series, video games. You name it the spy genre has left there mark somewhere to make sure that you never forget them   the spy game has had a very successful run in the films. Although never quite commanding the respect they deserve from moviegoers …

I'll freely admit I enjoyed Knight and Day - in which master criminal-cum-cop-cum-spy Tom Cruise embarks on an intercontinental gallivant, having (literally) stumbled into winsome, dippy and adorable Cameron Diaz - even if I don't really understand why. As I reflected on the film over the weekend it occurred to me that, critically speaking, I'd had my pocket picked. But at least I had been swindled as masterfully and outrageously as any of the many conspiracies in the movie. Before I realised what …

Knight and Day is the perfect movie for all those guys who have sat through a chick flick they didn't wanna and all those ladies who have sat through an action movie that they didn't care for. The movie combines the best of both worlds.    Tom Cruise might have all kinds of issues these days but none of them show in this movie, he combines the best of his younger action days with some sly comedy that constantly works.    Cameron Diaz plays the the 30 something …
Quick Tip by . June 30, 2010
It is unoriginal, uninspired and at sometimes rather cliche but "Knight and Day" is the kind of movie that summer is made for and proves to deliver on what it promises. Great escapism.

About this movie

Knight and Day, (formerly titled Wichita and Trouble Man) is a 2010 action comedy film starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. The film, directed by James Mangold, is Cruise and Diaz's second on-screen collaboration following the 2001 film Vanilla Sky.

The film went through a period of "development hell"; which included a prior film director and multiple writers that worked on the script. Producers for Knight and Day went through multiple other actors for the lead roles before eventually settling on Cruise and Diaz. Adam Sandler, Chris Tucker, and Gerard Butler were considered by the film's producers for the male lead that later went to Cruise, and Eva Mendes was initially set for the role that Diaz later portrayed in the movie. The film's investors offset funding costs by paying Cruise a lower advance fee and neglecting to provide him with a share of the revenue until the financiers earn back their initial investment in the production. Filming took place in several locations, mainly in several cities located in Massachusetts, while other scenes were filmed in Spain and parts of Austria.

Knight and Day was released in the United States on June 23, 2010. The film received mixed reviews from film critics; it garnered a "rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes based upon aggregated reviews, and a rating of "mixed or average reviews" at Metacritic. Knight and Day performed poorly at the box office in its debut, proceeded to fall nine percent in...
