Since this movie was released almost 30 years ago most people are unaware of this title. I have not seen this movie since it was released and yet I can still recall the horror and violence every time I even hear someone give directions and the words last house are included ... left, right, up, down, whatever.
Viewed today most people would find this similar to most slasher films released in that time frame, ie, Chain Saw, etc., but considering it is based on a true story and I am female, this movie remains very disturbing to me. The fact that I can recalls this many details about this movie is testament to that.
Centered around two girls (it is one of their birthday by the way) who say they are going to the movies in town and go elsewhere (face it, they are kids after all) and unfortunately run into the really bad guys. These girls are kidnapped, raped and murdered. The idea of last house is while their abductors are driving these girls around they have car trouble and stop off to kill the girls. Oddly enough (it is Wes Craven remember) it happens to be on one of the girls property that this horror occurs. Being Craven their torture is most foul, in fact quite horrible and visible.
The bad guys then go to the house and the girls parents take them in (remember this is 1972) and put them up for the night. All things being equal, the mother discovers the locket she had just given her daughter for her birthday and plots revenge (guys I know you don't like it, but it was a just revenge - long before anyone heard of Ms. Bobbitt).
The revenge murders are pretty typical of that time era and the fact that this is a Craven vehicle. In all, a pretty disgusting and horrid film. The problem with the entire film and its premise though, this little show is played out everyday somewhere and if you are female, you wonder if it is going to happen to you.
It is a look into the violent side of life and the things some men think it is their right to do to some women. There are some sick souls out there and this is a portrayal of them. Not a good date movie, but one that guys and girls should both see.
Even after almost 30 years I get !#$!%!~@#%!% when I think of this film!
I think this film has at its essence the true spirit of the horror film. To me this film is not entertaining, and it is one of only a handful of films that truly disturbed me, one that follows through on it's intent to horrify. Most modern horror films tend to glamorize violence and gore, and tend to herald killers as anti-heroes to a point where the audience is no longer horrified or scared. What I found interesting is where this film sits on the timeline of horror, right after … more
Last House on the Left was the first film that Wes Craven directed. Another horror alumnus Sean Cunningham was the Producer of the film and co-conspirator. The movie follows a teenager named Mari who's celebrating her 17th birthday. She decides to celebrate her b-day with her best friend Phyliss. The two go to the city to see a hard rock band and decide to score some dope. That's when they come across a path of psychos led by Krug (David … more
