Looking for Mr. Goodbar

Sex, drugs and rock and roll

Pros: good acting

Cons: lousy ideas

OK, on the other side of the coin - lust, longing, murder. This flick has it all!

Diane Keaton (Theresa) plays the part of the nice little girl living at home with mommy and daddy, teaching hearing impaired children by day and being a little $lutty by night.

Repressed at home, tired of her overbearing father and mouse of a mother, her flamboyant sister (Tuesday Weld, ‘nuf said) - lonely, sexually depraved, looking for ‘Mr. Right'. Unfortunately, it is the time when the only place to look are the singles bars, full of a lot of ‘Mr. Wrongs'.

Her first encounter, James Morrissey (William Atherton), sweet and loving - maybe a little too sweet and loving. Hell, she might as well be at home with mommy and daddy.

Next we meet Tony Lopanto (Richard Gere) - his name alone screams sexuality! Just a little sadistic - not heavy but enough to tease and tantalize her.

Finally, Gary White (Tom Berenger) - slightly insane (can you be slightly insane?), bisexual, heathen. Just enough spice for Theresa to act out those repressed sexual tendencies. Unfortunately, Gary has a few tendencies to act out himself, and we find Theresa lying dead across the bed.

A decidedly nasty little peek into sex, drugs and rock and roll. Theresa plays her duel role nicely flirting between staid and proper school teacher and daughter and out of control swinger at night. A haunting look into a city where everyone lives but no one talks to each other.

An outstanding performance by Keaton who displays a full range of acting talents. Berenger gives a chilling shot as an insane individual (again, doesn't he play a lot of these types of parts?) And Tuesday Weld is just cute and fiesty enough for fun. Gere, of course is Gere.

I don't know where the premise of the name of the movie came from, perhaps I missed it somewhere in the movie. The idea I understand - we are all looking for Mr. Goodbar - but the name left me a little befuddled. In fact, to this day I can't eat a Hersey's Goodbar, one of my favorites, without seeing Keaton laying across that bed. Ah, the power of suggestion!

Theresa Dunn (Diane Keaton) is sensitive grade-school teacher who leads a very different life after hours.
