Marley, The World's Best Worst Dog Will Win Your Hearts Over in "Marley & Me"
Oct 15, 2009
I'm not afraid to admit that I get emotional during movies. Having said that, it takes a really well written film to get me in that kind of state of mind. While Marley & Me is a comedy drama for most of the film, it has moments of real emotion, dealing with real life issues like buying a house and having kids. Marley & Me is a film that I think every human being can relate to, whether that means with dealing with your troublesome dog or getting pregnant at a time that may not have been the best. When it comes down to it though, this film is about one of the cutest dogs in movie history...Marley. He also happens to have a great cast behind him with Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson.
When John (Wilson) decides to get a dog for his wife Jenny's (Aniston) birthday, the two go to a kennel together and pick out a labrador retriever named Marley. Unsuspecting about the discount the couple got on the cute puppy, they soon realize that Marley is not your average dog. As he eats everything in sight and howls at thunder storms, John and Jenny realize that while Marley is absolute chaos, they can't help but love him. Through the years the happy family deals with the birth of children, getting new jobs and the overall gains and pains of life. No matter what happens though, John, Jenny and the rest of their family alway come back to mans best friend and worst nightmare...Marley.
I was really surprised at how well Marely & Me was made. Everything clicked with this movie and all throughout, it felt very real. What shocked me the most was Owen Wilson's acting. Let's face it, Owen Wilson isn't the world's best actor and will probably never be nominated for an oscar, but he was really good in Marley & Me. He did a magnificent job making audiences believe that he was this column writer and that Marley was his dog. On top of that, I just went crazy during all the scenes where Marley was being trouble. The scene when they try to take him to obedience school was probably the funniest part of the whole movie. if you already have seen Marley & Me, than you know it is also a very emotional film, but it was really well executed. I think no matter what people think by the end of this film, it will make them want a dog more than they already do.
Marley & Me is a great film to sit down and watch when you don't really know what else is on TV. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry, but I think most people will have good feeling after the end of the film. Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston are terrific as is Alan Arkin who plays John's boss. All in all though, Marley is the star of this film and he makes that very clear. Be prepared to here your significant other asking to buy a dog after the film though cause it will happen. Definitely have tissues on the ready as this one is a tearjerker. Marley gets a 5/5!
I was skeptical that 'Marley & Me' would be a horribly sappy story with an overly cute dog and no plot whatsoever. Well, I wound out watching it when I was sick and nothing else was on, and I was so very wrong about it. I was smitten – overwhelmed – by how good the movie is. Yes, it's sappy in places, but it's still a great movie. There's both comedy and tragedy, and some surprisingly good acting even from the normally amateurish Jennifer Aniston. … more
Just goes to show you....on Sunday I swore to a whole room full of people that I'd never watch Marley and Me. Why? Multiple reasons. A) I can not handle pets in jeopardy scenes. I won't watch Old Yeller, I cried over the promo clip for 8 Below, my mom always thought Lassie was my favorite show, but I always watched with my little heart in my throat and sweat glistening my brow. B) I'm sentimental and a sucker for anything that is designed to play my heartstrings. I've cried … more
Let's face it, there are times when a movie studio can mess up a perfectly fine book. Who hasn't left a theater grumbling about what Hollywood has done to one of their favorite reads? That's certainly not the case with Marley & Me - it's a wonderful book and as directed by David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada), it's a wonderful movie. The casting could not have been better. Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston are perfect as John & Jenny Grogan, a young couple, both newspaper … more
Honestly, I didn't expect much from this film going in. I mentally prepared myself for yet another cutesy animal movie complete with over the top performances and a gaping hole where a plot should be. It didn't take long for me to realize just how wrong I was. The film's biggest surprise for me was Owen Wilson's performance. I've always been a big fan of Wilson's humor and the unorthodox demeanor he brings to each character. He is a funny dude and that's all I've ever expected … more
Marley and me is based on the best selling book by John Grogan about a golden lab he purchased to try and fill the need his wife feels for having a baby. The star are Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston...but the real star of the show is Marley...named after the legendary artist Bob Marley. From the moment they get Marley, the world's worst dog, his incorrigible behavior becomes apparent. His first night with his new family and Marley destroys the garage...his master's bedroom...and part of the car. … more
