While I loved it as a child, it never occured to me my 3 year old would also love it. She fell in love with it at my parent's house and sang the songs she learned for weeks afterward. She looked forward to watching it so much everytime she visited them that I had to pick her up her own copy for X-mas!
'Mary Poppins' elicits a charm that hasn't diminished since its debut. Besides the marvelous debut of Julie Andrews, a stellar performance by Dick Van Dyke, and a more than adequate supporting cast, the songs are terrific, the story is engaging--criss crossing between Englands' class society, Women's Suffrage, and child rearing. A few intangibles--like a break in tension or a less resounding effect of other sixties musicals (notably Oliver and The Sound of Music) mar what is otherwise a magical … more
In my opinions, Mary Poppins is one of the best childrens films ever made and one of my personal favourite movies. What can I say, it's practically perfect in every way. Nothing can ever stop me from loving this movie. The catchy songs, the legendary story, the great performances, and of course the world's coolest nanny herself, Mary Poppins are just a few things that make this movie great. Mary Poppins will forever go down as Disney's best live action film and one of the best made kids … more
The all-new 40th Anniversary edition of MARY POPPINS is definitely a must-own for all fans of the movie, and has been well worth the wait. As the editorial review states, this is the third DVD of MARY POPPINS to be released. The last edition (on the Gold Classics label) featured a great print but scant extras and fans simply knew that the Disney company should have done a better job remastering and releasing one of their most beloved films. Our prayers have been answered! This … more
Right up front, let me say that I am NOT a fan of this movie. But I know lots of people are, and I'm not about to start tearing it apart because I find it too treacly...much more than a spoonful of sugar in this flick. BUt, there's no sense reviewing it. I'm a 40 year old man, my opinion of this film is not terribly important. Nor can I comment on whether kids will still like it...neither of mine can be coerced into watching it. But the DVD CANNOT BE FAULTED. It's packed full … more
There is only one word that comes close to accurately describing the enchantingMary Poppins, and that term was coined by the movie itself: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even at 2 hours and 20 minutes, Disney's pioneering mixture of live action and animation (based on the books by P.L. Travers) still holds kids spellbound. Julie Andrews won an Oscar as the world's most magically idealized nanny ("practically perfect in every way," and complete with lighter-than-air umbrella), and Dick Van Dyke is her clownishly charming beau, Bert the chimney sweep. The songs are also terrific, ranging from bright and cheery ("A Spoonful of Sugar") to dark and cheery (the Oscar-winning "Chim Chim Cher-ee") to touchingly melancholy ("Feed the Birds"). Many considerMary Poppinsto be the crowning achievement of Walt Disney's career--and it was the only one of his features to be nominated for a best picture Academy Award untilBeauty and the Beastin 1991.--Jim Emerson
