Why Does Giovanni Rabisi Always Play an Idiot?

Pros: Claire Danes looks really hot; Great soundtrack

Cons: I hate Giovanni Rabisi!!!!!; Awful script; No chemistry in the cast; Wanted to stab myself in the neck with a number two pencil during the whole time

While walking through K-Mart the other day, I happened upon the $6.99 movie section. Mind you, I'm not your normal K-Mart shopper. I just ran in to get something for a show, and I came across a few cheap movies. Since I just moved into a dorm and just got a new TV and VCR, I thought to myself, "Self, why not get a movie?"

So, I perused the movies. My goal was to get something I had never seen before. When I came upon Mod Squad, I was stoked. Being a total 70s fanatic (I loves me some Brady Bunch and bell-bottoms!), I grabbed the flick and proceeded to check-out.

That night, Dionne, Erik and I watched Mod Squad. Dionne left halfway through it, Erik fell asleep, and I watched the whole thing, just praying for something to get better.

The basic story is about these three teenagers who are forced to choose between jail time and working undercover on the police force. Of course, they choose the latter of the two, and get into places that cops usually can't. They get involved in a drug bust that includes some dirty cops and one of Julie's (Claire Danes) ex-boyfriends (Josh Brolin), and save the day.

The "coincidences" that occur in the movie are absolutely ridiculous. Link (Omar Epps) figures out who will lead them to the bottom of the case. The Moron (Giovanni Rabisi - I can't remember his characters name) just so happens to be banned from the club so he can see who Link is following. It's just ridiculous.

Why does Rabisi always wind up in a role that makes him look like schmuck? He plays the same exact role in this movie as he did in The Postman and Gone in 60 Seconds. I haven't seen a movie where I like his character yet! He just grates on your nerves, and you feel you want to fast forward through his scenes. He totally ruins this movie. Even if the script were any good, Rabisi ruins it just by being there.

Claire Danes and Omar Epps are great, but don't have anything to work with. There's absolutely no chemistry between any members of the cast, especially between the lovers Danes and Brolin. He looks old enough to be her father. Not good casting choices, in my humble opinion.

The soundtrack kicks major booty. I love the wah-wah pedal used in the classic 70s guitar riffs along with those funky drum beats. Awesome! If there's a Mod Squad soundtrack out there, I definitely want to buy it.

After watching this movie, I'm surprised that it wasn't on the Clearance rack. Maybe next time I'll splurge the extra three bucks and see what's on the other shelf.
