An oldie but, goodie! When the moon hits your eye, like a big pizza pie, that's amore...I just caught this on MGMHD and forgot how much I enjoy this movie starring Cher about an Italian Brooklynite who finds love with her fiance's brother, played incredibly passionately by Nic Cage. A stupendous cast includes Olympia Dukakis as Cher's mother who says my favorite line of the movie, "You've got a love bite on your neck...your life's going down the toilet! Go wash that thing off!". My favorite scene was when Ronny, aka Cage, tells Loretta, aka Cher, "I love you" and she slaps him hard twice, then says, "Snap out of it." In this glowingly atmospheric comedy, a young Italian-American woman, bitter after having been widowed by a speeding bus, makes a practical decision to marry a longtime friend for stability and security, even though her feelings for him are tepid at best. But when she falls in love with her fiance's estranged one-handed younger brother, screwball sparks fly. Great, subtle performances and a warm regard for the film's Bronx milieu highlight the film. Academy Award Nominations: 6, including Best Picture, Best Director. Academy Awards: 3, including Best Actress--Cher, Best Supporting Actress--Olympia Dukakis, and Best Original Screenplay.
