Good Tidings for the '...Afternoon'

It is good to see the movie return of Gerard Depardieu (as Germaine) who here plays a bit of an old ox running a vegetable stand from the produce he makes in his back yard. Next to his mobile home is his mother who lives in the house he grew up in. Her impatience brings several flashbacks of his single-mother upbringing and her abuse. Striking up friendships and games at a local cafe' Germaine gets little respect as a near-illiterate member of the social ladder. His life is changed one day as he meets the titled character while feeding pigeons in the park. She reciprocates their friendship by reading to him and lending him her books. While the proceedings could have been trite and the sideplots barely hold up the main one, the movie is heartwarming and nicely knit at all ends. Good, substantative, and not too taxing for the subtitle intolerant.
