Last February, I was totally excited when I was cast as one of the students at John Hughes High School in Not Another Teen Movie. I didn't have any lines, but I was featured in several scenes. I was the girl that all of the popular girls made fun of. At one point, Priscilla (Jamie Pressley) actually singled me out and said I had "fat elbows." I was totally stoked.
I couldn't have been more disappointed when I saw the film in it's entirety.
We all know that Not Another Teen Movie is supposed to be a parody of as many teen-genre films as possible. And, true, it does indeed succeed in that area. However, the parodies happen to fall short of any real subplots that there were. (And, I KNOW that they were there! I have the original script!)
Unfortunately, the entire "plot" of the movie is exactly like that of She's All That, which I wisely avoided when it came out the first time around. Jake (Chris Evans) is the popular jock who makes a bet with some of his friends to turn Janey Briggs (Chyler Leigh) into prom queen. I'm sorry, but I believe that this "theme" originated with Guys and Dolls, where Nathan Detroit bets Sky Masterson that he can't get Sarah Brown to go to Havana with him. Alas, I digress.
There just aren't enough subplots! Oh, wait, let me rephrase that. There are too MANY subplots that just don't go into enough depth. Don't blame the writers, though: THEY WERE ONCE THERE!! For example, Areola (Cerina Vincent), the naked foreign exchange student, had LOTS of interaction with Janey, much like the Frenchy - Sandy relationship in Grease.
Chyler Leigh, aside from the opening masturbation scene, was probably the best in the cast. Even though my husband didn't like her, I also thought Pressley did a fine job as well.
This movie is too vulgar - believe it or not, they cut a lot of that out, too. I was mortified when I came home and got a message from my mom saying that she and my stepdad were headed to see the film. I didn't have time to warn her.
The only reason I'm getting the DVD is because I want to see if the other scenes - specifically the ones with ME! - are on it. I certainly hope so. I know it's a waste of money, but it adds to the "Candice Cook Collection." I just regret recommending it to people before I even saw it. Ugh.
Don't take your children to see it. There is too much sex, nudity and "potty" humor. I can't believe how vulgar and obscene the film it. Maybe I'm just getting old.
