3 ½ Stars: The PREDATORS Are Back In Town...

  • Jul 10, 2010
I’ve always liked the concept of 1987’s “Predator” with Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was simple, precise and exciting; admittedly the franchise has been misused by Hollywood with “Predator 2” and “Alien Vs. Predator” since they proved quite inferior to the original and even to the comic book mini-series that has been inspired by the original movie. When cult director Robert Rodriguez (Planet Terror, Desperado) was announced as the producer of the new movie “PREDATORS”, I was excited. I had hopes that the Rodriguez and director Nimrod Antal can bring the franchise back to its supposed glory. Well, more than 20 years after the original film, “Predators” is the “Predator” movie that fans have screamed for.

8 individuals with different backgrounds; some undisclosed while some are military, some are killers, death row inmate, yakuza, a doctor (Adrien Brody, Alice Braga, Topher Grace, Walton Goggins among others) are literally dropped in a strange planet for an unknown reason with no memory as to how they got there. Most of them are armed when they wake up and it doesn’t take long for them to realize that they are put in this planet for a very sinister purpose. This planet looks the same as Earth but it definitely isn’t their home planet. The eight are chosen for their predatory instincts as an ultimate test as to how they would try to survive against some alien warrior race that likes to hunt. But which predators are more dangerous….?

It is easy to like “Predators” since it definitely feels like a more direct sequel to the original than “Predator 2” ever was. Instead of trying to do something different, the script by Alex Litvak and Michael Finch stay close to the original’s tone, set ups and mood while expanding on the original’s established mythos from both the 80’s films and the recent ones by Paul W.S. Anderson. It was a clever move to expand on those formulas as it does feel like a “Predator” film. Even the heart-throbbing score of the original by Alan Silvestri was used to generate the film’s thrills and suspense; slightly updated for the film to feel a little more “sci-fi-like”.

Topher Grace as Edwin in "Predators."

Laurence Fishburne as Noland in "Predators."

Alice Braga as Isabelle, Walton Goggins as Stans and Adrien Brody as Royce in "Predators."

There are a lot of tribute shots to the original as seen with the waterfall, the use of the mud, the final iconic fight, the call to battle by the Indian (this time done by a Japanese) among others. It was a clever approach to see those touches as it was clearly a tribute movie as much as a sequel. The film also discusses briefly what happened after the events of the original film which cements the scenes meant to be a homage injected within its screenplay.

I also found it interesting how the film managed to develop and identify the “predators” in the earlier movies from the more recent movies; seems like there are some ‘tribes’ to the alien-hunter race; some wear the facemasks/helmets from the original and its first sequel while others have the slightly fancier facemasks/helmets who are also slightly bigger. I also noticed that some are a lot uglier than others and they have slightly different weapons (especially the claws); it may have been my imagination but I thought their behavior was different as to how they hunted. The Predators are more developed as we see some of them using their own ‘pets’ (as in hunting dogs) for the hunt. These dogs are huge, uglier than their masters and very intimidating. I really liked their appearance even if they had limited screen time. It also cements the characteristics that the aliens are intelligent, they learn and they evolve their hunting methods. (as also stated by Laurence Fishburne in a cameo appearance).

Adrien Brody as Royce and Alice Braga as Isabelle in "Predators."

The action in the film is good and follows the style, mood and tone of the original film as well as its injections of the blood and the gore (thank goodness this wasn't forced a PG-13 rating). I liked the gore effects but disliked the green blood CGI-effects but at least the film didn't overuse the CGI by keeping the original's style. This can work but some may say that some parts of the film felt like a rehash of the key scenes of Schwarzenegger’s film (this alien planet feels a lot like Guatemala in the original) but Antal and Rodriguez learned, applied and expanded on what they deemed valuable from it. Adrien Brody (Splice) is not Arnold, but I think it worked to his advantage to look more shall we say….ordinary? Sexy Alice Braga (Repo Men) takes over the role of ‘damsel in distress’ (played before by Elpidia Carrillo) but this damsel isn’t so helpless.

Adrien Brody as Royce and Laurence Fishburne as Noland in "Predators."

I guess if the movie had a flaw is that the supporting characters were underdeveloped that they did feel like ‘fodder’ and there was no question as to what their final fate would be. I also wished that the planet should’ve been more developed and it missed the opportunity to fully justify the appearance of a ‘last survivor’ except to strengthen the fact that humans can be more traitorous than the aliens they are fighting. The film does have some commentary about humanity being selfish and treacherous and whether the ends justify the means. The script does have some surprising twists to deepen the plot but this is undeniably a formula film that relies heavily on the ‘predator’s’ development.

“Predators” is a formula film and proved quite entertaining. It isn’t exactly groundbreaking but it manages to be inventive when it needed to and it does expand on the concept to justify a sequel. I just wished that there was more of a story to everything but at least, Rodriguez and company left the doors open for more sequels and hopefully, this new world created to be the home of the ‘predators’ will yield more answers. While not exactly an inventive film, it sure wouldn’t be forgettable and would hold up to repeated viewing to fans of the franchise. I see the franchise hopefully resurrected.

I learned some things I didn't know from this review, WOOPY! You certainly know your films, even the directors and producers. It's interesting to know you like this better than the others that followed the original. That says a lot for this film. ;-)
August 07, 2010
This movie was a movie that relied on a simple formula--but it does it very well. Thanks for the read, Betty!
August 07, 2010
I'm not familiar with the rank yet, WOOPY! What do the 27s and 24 mean? I thought the top was 3? Or is that 3 for each person who votes? Hmmm... xo
August 07, 2010
oh, the 27 and the 24 are the accumulated 'thumbies'; makes it better since even if someone tries to put down your review with a neggie, it will only count as a 1 thumb down. The 3 thumbies are a way to rate the quality of reviews. Hence, each vote can have a perfect score of 12 from one person then it gets added up.

All of my replies aren't showing up. I'm probably typing in the wrong box... LOL Forgive me... Thanks for the explanation... I sort of figured it out AFTER I e'd you. Going to store now, so c u later... Have a great weekend, WOOPY...

Sounds like I have a movie to see!
August 07, 2010
Hey, Queenie, AFTER.LIFE is now out on dvd...curious of what you may think of it.
August 07, 2010
I haven't put it on my list yet. Is it worth it? I think I must have skipped thereviews because I don't remember anything about it. Maybe I just scanned theem. I'll have to check it out.
August 07, 2010
It is for horror fans and I am curious as to how you make out of its premise. You may be able to do a better review of it than I ever could when I saw it in theaters and the dvd is unrated.
August 07, 2010
I checked it out and put it on my NetFlix list. It seems to pretty uniformly reviled over there. The faact that it's unrated, is that because of the constant nudity? It seemed to be the only thing that everyone mentioned in their reviews.
August 07, 2010
Blanca here in the community is a cinematic horror fan as I can tell, and she liked it. It is not for everyone, and besides, our horror tastes are usually reviled in netflix anyway-because more people want jump scares a lot.

And lots of silly CGI.
July 10, 2010
Yes sir I am watching this one tonight, got to go see this. Missed last night due to some things but I can't miss tonight, plus MMA legend Oleg Taktarov is one of the leads. EXCELLENT review WP.
July 10, 2010
Taktarov is one bad mofo. I expect a review after ok? we need to spread the word about this movie!
July 10, 2010
I am also going to see "Grown Ups" today as well, checking that one out early at 4 and then will catch Pred's right after.
July 10, 2010
cool. I expect full reports LOL!
July 10, 2010
I got cha good sir, I will try to drop one tonight or 2morrow and the next a day or two later.
July 11, 2010
Great! We will look forward to it. By the way, I dropped a review for something "despicable"....(hint hint)
July 10, 2010
William: Damn it, I made a rare opening day appearance to see this but still couldn't beat you to it! lol Believe it or not there are many similarities between our reviews (not the least of which is our final scores) BUT I didn't even know you reviewed it when I wrote/ published mine. Great minds or what? Great review and clearly, I concur!
July 10, 2010
ha-hah. I just came from your review and it is really awesome that we both reviewed this on opening night. We always think very much alike and we see the same things (I guess it is because we are both used to Japanimation) which is why our reviews usually have very similar things to say. Thanks, bud. Stay tuned, I have two animated movies coming...one of them I can bet you know that it is going to be despicable... ;)
July 10, 2010
Excellent review!! When I first heard about this movie I was totally psyched I was even more excited when I saw the trailer this looks like it could officially revive the long dead Predator franchise. I have also heard that there is talk of a sequel and maybe even a prequel with Laurence Fishbrune. Either way this film looks like it has some serious potential.
July 10, 2010
Thanks, Lopez. If you are a fan of the Predator franchise then you will love this. It is a set up for something good I hope. Rodriguez usually hits the right spots.
July 10, 2010
I could never get into this series. I preferred "Alien". But damn, that's a great cast!
July 10, 2010
can't say I blame you; the franchise has been misused by H-wood. I thought this movie revived the franchise. I was surprised as to how much I enjoyed it.
July 10, 2010
by the way, a dweeb just kept on linking this to his communities despite the fact that this is NOT a comic book movie and he has his own topic point for it. I made this to be separate from anything this person does...I dunno what is wrong with this person.
July 10, 2010
Gee, I wonder who you mean. LOL!
July 10, 2010
a movie that inspired a comic mini-series is NOT a comic-inpired movie. I warned this person that I would do this if he keeps up. He knows this wasn't the data point he created because I made it to be isolated from his stuff. God, the guy would not listen. (sigh)
July 10, 2010
I sent you a link to a book you may be interested in.
July 10, 2010
I know. I am so excited...took out that comment since this person just said he will remove the links.
July 10, 2010
I keep finding more stuff. I don't know why suddenly they have all these things that either myself or my friends are interested in, but they do. You see the other link on your profile?
July 10, 2010
just email me the links. I like weird books. Hey, your Lunch.com page freezing lately?

Go to the site and do a search on samurai, you'll be impressed I think.
July 10, 2010
except for one topic, it is all me?
July 10, 2010
What do you mean?
July 10, 2010
oops sorry, I thought you meant search this site. Yup, it is pretty impressive. I am sending you a book on the history of samurai movies--it is the reason why I know so much about it.
July 10, 2010
Sweet. I've been meaning to get some stuff off to people lately, but it keeps getting delayed along with everything else. My library stuff is like two weeks overdue which has never happened before.
July 10, 2010
Btw, JRider reviewed this too--in case you need convincing if you want to see it.
December 12, 2010
Wow, I saw it and it wasn't bad. Too bad Danny Trejo got killed off so early though.

** out of ****      Through all the bad sequels, prequels, and of course AVP, a new "Predator" film releases and essentially tries as hard as it can to revive a potentially great franchise. And...it doesn't quite do any of that. In fact, it doesn't revive "Predator" at all. The original is still the best and as far as I'm concerned it will always BE the best, even if "Predators" is a positive step up from "Predator 2" …

The Third Dedicated Predator Film Pays Homage to the First
I have been an avid Predator fan since the Governor of California first tangled with one in the jungles back in 1987.  I wasn’t swayed a few years later when the black cop from Lethal Weapon took one of the same alien species out amidst gang warfare in a (then) futuristic Los Angeles.  I stuck with it even through the AVP disaster (redeemed slightly by the second effort).  Naturally, it was with extreme trepidation that I went into Predators; first showing on opening …

After two awful movies where the Predators hunt Aliens on Earth, Robert Rodriguez, Nimrod Antal, and company went back to the jungle for the latest installment in the Predators franchise.   Eight, well actually nine but one dies upon impact, people from different occupations with varying skills find themselves in an unknown jungle. The last thing each person remembers is that they saw a bright light and when they awoke they found themselves falling from the sky. These eight individuals …

Unlike Alien (The Director's Cut), which had a great sequel in Cameron's Aliens (Two-Disc Collector's Edition), Predator 2 was a flop and an insult to Schwarzenegger's Predator. The more recent predator movies, like Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem, were total garbage.     Thus, it was nice to see Predators captured some of the magic of the original. Sure, it doesn't take many risks and pretty much copies the same recipe as the original, from who dies when and the finale. However, …

PREDATORS      It has been a long time since an actual Predator movie as been made and I have to say that I am truly happy another did indeed come along. Sure we had two AVP films come out but those were not straight Predator films, and to be honest those had the potential to be so much more. Don't get me wrong I didn't hate any of them but they could have been better. So when I heard Robert Rodriguez was involved with the next Predator film …

"Predators" begins with Adrien Brody coming to in mid-freefall, which is a first for me as a moviegoer. We don't exactly know where he fell from, but we do know that he's literally falling from the sky, and only at the last second does he realize he's equipped with a parachute, which miraculously pops open. Regardless, his landing is rough; he plummets through dense jungle foliage before ending up in a muddy clearing. Over the next few minutes, he meets - and is nearly killed by - seven other people, …
