The film was produced by

Gore Verbinski's production company Blind Wink, and

CGI animation was created by
Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), marking the first feature animation done by ILM, generally a
special effects company.

Speaking of which, illustrator, film director, and comic book artist Dave McKean did some awesome cubist paintings based on silent films. One is a slightly naughty picture of the robot Maria from "Metropolis" and the other is a cool montage inspired by "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari".
