Groundhog Day in Germany

  • Jun 25, 2010
Thanks to Scotman I saw this film.  Lola with the blazing red hair gets a desperate call from her boyfriend Mani.  Apparently, his 100,000 German Marks (before the Euro) that was due to a very mean person was lost on a train and picked up by a homeless man.  If Mani doesn't come up with the money in 20 minutes, he will be very dead.  He tells Lola he will probably rob a store.  She tells him to wait for her and she will think of something.

So begins the running of Lola.  The movie is well directed and borrows a little from the Bill Murray movie Groundhog Day.  There are a lot of comic moments each time Lola passes somebody while running and we see what the future has in store for each of these passing people.

With each iteration of the tale, a minor change seems to cause a great deal of change and in some cases no change at all.

The movie is pulse pounding fast and I really enjoyed it.

Winner of the 1999 Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival, Lola is fast (pun intended), action packed and musically moving movie, about a girl whose boyfriend is mixed with the mob and he's lost their money. She has 20 minutes to solve this problem or else Manni will be feeding fishes in the Rhine!

Great seeing this fast-paced German film again. Man, Lola has stamina! Three alternate realities all based on a few seconds' difference can make all the changes in the world. If the light were green rather than red, would your life turn out different?

I first saw Run Lola Run in a social studies class in high school... and let me just say, it blew me away. I can't remember ALL the details of this movie, but here's the quick run down.    Lola needs to get money for her boyfriend, Manni. This movie shows three 20 minute "clips" - each of her doing the same thing: running out of her house, past people in her neighborhood, trying to get the money for her boyfriend.    However, in each of these clips, there …

About this movie

Run Lola Run
is a 1998 German film about a girl Lola who needs to get 100,000 Deutsche Marks in order to save her Manni's (her boyfriend) life.

When Lola receives the phone call from Manni explaining that he needs to get the money to his boss within 20 minutes so he can avoid his punishment, Lola decides to take the task on herself and ask her father for the money.

The movie shows three different scenarios of what Lola has to encounter that morning when she tries to get the money for her boyfriend. Each of these scenarios are very similar, yet the people and instances that Lola runs into differ immensely.
