Pros: Kilmer

Cons: ......

I have never seen one movie where one actor could change is appearance so completely as Val Kilmer does in The Saint .

Kilmer/Saint/Simon Templar is hired to steal a formula that deals with the production of energy. This formula is in the nimble hands of Emma Russell (Elisabeth Shue). Templar, generally a loner, falls for the irrepressible Russell, but must still relieve her of her nasty little formula.

Throughout the movie Templar romps through one costume after another, choosing the names of Catholic saints as his guise (hence the name of the movie, duh!). Two or three times I didn't recognize him myself and I was looking for him. I particularly liked the bumbling professor type at the seminar when Russell was delivering her speech.

Of course there is a good deal of bad guys chasing after the good guys if you can truly determine who are the bad guys and who are the good guys here! In the end the formula is stolen, the bad guys foiled, the Saint and the Babe get together. Life is good.

Decent acting by Kilmer, fresh from his Batman semi-failure (there WAS only one Batman and that was Keaton). A good bit a not quite believable but acceptable mincing by Shue as the beautiful but unrealistic Russell. It was an OK movie but I was wanting a little more. Of course, I watched it for Kilmer anyway and I got Kilmer, so I guess my goal was accomplished. Loosely based on the comic book, radio and TV series.

About this movie

Wiki

Simon Templar (Val Kilmer), AKA The Saint, realizes his skill for trickery during his childhood in a Far East orphanage. He uses his natural born gifts, including a penchant for bizarre and effective disguises, to obtain things for people which they can not obtain themselves. When he is hired by a Russian crime boss (Rade Serbedzija, BEFORE THE RAIN) to use his chameleon-like abilities to lift the secrets of cold fusion from Oxford-based scientist Emma Russell (Elizabeth Shue), he has little idea he might fall in love with his victim--or be double-crossed by his snakelike employer. Based on the character created by author Leslie Chateris, which spawned dozens of novels and a popular 1960s British television series starring Roger Moore.
