First, I have a confession. I went to this movie in a feeble attempt to somehow prove to myself that this 40-year-old stay-at-home mom is still hip. (Do they even use the word "hip" anymore?) Yes, I was probably the oldest one there, and there were some parts that I was not crazy about – like the continual reference to the “pee meter” – but overall I enjoyed this trendy flick based off a graphic novel I admit I’ve never heard of.
Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera )is an ordinary unemployed, geeky 22-year-old Canadian who plays bass in a really bad band and is still trying to get over his girlfriend who dumped him a year prior. Then, through a series of strange dream-like sequences, he meets “Ramona”, the literal “girl of his dreams,” an American with pink hair (to start with), cool clothes and a cold attitude (not to mention she skates). The two begin dating when he runs across the first of her seven evil ex-boyfriends, I mean “exes,” who Scott must defeat in order to date Ramona.
The film is filled with quirky characters, funky captions, Crouching-Tiger action and a lot of humor. The fact that they cast Cera as the lead adds to the zaniness in that this lanky fluffy-haired nerd not only had hot girlfriends vying for him, but he was also supposed to take on some serious kick-butt villains. My favorite ex was Todd, the vegan bass player who had super powers because everyone knows vegans are just naturally cooler. Some of the elements, such as the aforementioned “pee meter” and the continual crudeness of his homosexual roommate were a little much for me. But the effects, the directing and the editing were unique and cool. I especially appreciated the jerkiness of the editing and the way that many of the scenes ended just a little earl… .
Overall, it was just a fun, zany and entertaining movie. There were several moments that I found myself actually giggling, which I consider to be better than just laugh-out-loud funny. It’s probably not everyone’s cup of tea (Ramona preferred Sleepy Time), but for those willing to attempt something a little eccentric, it’s definitely a movie you won't soon forget.
