While I like the original Star Wars Trilogy, I think it's massively overrated. I think it's overrated because when you get down to it, it's a pretty simple "good vs evil" tale merely told in an imaginative universe, though people still insist that it's the best creation in the sci-fi genre (though it's best to classify Star Wars as space-fantasy or high tech-fantasy). It's GOOD, though that's as far as I'll go with my praise.  I honestly would have given this a 4, but Return of the Jedi's ludicrous actions pushed this down to a 3.

At the time they were made, 1977 did not have much in the way of fun science fiction. The campy, adventurous stuff of Buck Rogers and Captain Video went out in the 1950s. Where was the fun, space opera? Star Wars put the fun back in science fiction/fantasy and major film producers saw it was popular. Thanks to these films, we got Battlestar Galactica, and even Robocop and Terminator. They're actually more important to film history than themselves -- the total sum of their parts. :)

I certainly agree that Star Wars was important to sci-fi film (though I'd consider SW more space-fantasy than sci-fi), though I'm the type of guy who looks for the quality of the movie itself rather than its influence. Now with that said, I'm glad Star Wars was created because a lot of the sci-fi media I enjoy today wouldn't be here if Star Wars wasn't made.

I adore the original theatrical cuts of the Star Wars trilogy, have viewed the lot innumerably and (at a reserved estimate) will likely do so thirty times each again, but unlike so many devoted SW fans, this brand of space opera really is not to everyone's taste, and shouldn't be! Despite their flaws (and there are many), they represent fundamentally good filmmaking in the context of extremely imaginative production design. Unlike the excellent titles cited in your list (especially Kubrick's and Tarkovsky's contributions), I don't regard SW as sci-fi; it's a high-tech fantasy.

That's a great list you got there, Robert, and thanks for the complements on my recs. High-tech fantasy is a better way to put it, I just said it was sci-fi because there's a lot of people that I've bumped into that consider Star Wars sci-fi. I should probably make an amendment to my QT about what Star Wars really is in terms of genres.

I saw the Star Wars Trilogy only once in my entire life when I was very young. I honestly don't remember it at all.

That's understandable, because as good as this Trilogy is, I wouldn't consider it essential viewing.

Okay, so I know it's a well-worn cliche, but the original Star Wars film really did change my life. I had no idea about the film I was going to see and the opening scenes left me exhilarated and awestruck. People were actually paid to dream up, plan and make this stuff! I can trace so many of my decisions about the things I study and the work I do back to that moment.

Why would anybody watch these movies on full screen rather than widescreen? There's a lot more image in the widescreen versions. If you don't have a widescreen TV, watch the widescreen version on your computer. Don't sacrifice your viewing experience. Also, the bonus disc is worth getting, which this set doesn't have.
