Supertroopers. They are not all that super but they are troopers and they are probably the only police force I wouldn't mind following me for a few miles since the worst they would probably do to me is play silly mind games with me before letting me go.
Supertroopers is the product of the Broken Lizard comedy team, a bunch of guys who take turns in the proceeding movies with different roles as lead or good and bad guys. This movie has them as the force behind a Vermont Highway Patrol that is dangerously close to getting shut down from lack of funding and general incompetance. A big drug bust however might turn things around if not for the fact that the police are laying claim to it also. In between wondering when they'll get shut down, the Troopers goof around with the people they pull over and have contests for who can drink the most pancake syrup.
The movie overall has a real loose feel to make it enjoyable. The troopers are in danger of losing they're jobs but sail through the day as if everything will turn out okay. After all you can't let a thing like losing your job get in the way of BSing with motorists. If I was these guys, I'd be concerned about getting that drug bust so I can keep on working.
What do I mean? How about using a loudspeaker to tell a pulled over car to pullover. Maybe see how many times you can say "meow" to another motorist with a straight face or when you stop off for a quick bite, asking the server for a liter of fu**ing cola?
Supertroopers really tries hard and I do like it but it's not the laugh-a-thon people think it is. It does rely on some drug humor which I never really liked and then some jokes just weren't that funny. The film does have a cheap feel to it also. Not that it's bad but the background could have been a matte painting if they had less money to spend.
The Broken Lizard team has made more movies but this one is that benchmark that fans judge the groups other films by because of it's noteriety and appeal that drew the fans in the first time. A sequel is in the works and I can hope to see more of Farva, Throny, Rabbit and the rest when that time rolls around.
