Flashback? There was hardly any credible ones save for one or two (I fairly remember the original movie)...most of the details were made up in this movie as I could tell. But then again, the story was uninteresting so no one would care about flashbacks.
Well, I know Karen and I have a feeling she won't like this movie if she never liked the original "Tron".
Now movies like "Legend of the Guardians" and even "Salt" I can excuse the less than inventive plot and its missteps since one was meant as a pure visual display while the other focused on action. Their stories were very simple but they weren't pretentious in their execution. It is amazing that "Guardians" was more impressive in its effects quality while this film is seen by others as better? I guess it is because "Tron" has a following while "Guardians" doesn't.
And that was why I didn't like Tron Legacy as much. I still found it visually arresting, but it was the idea of it TRYING to have a plot that made it less fun than the original. The original was about having fun in the visual world it created, not about trying to get you think about humanity and all that. I'm always unnerved as it is when I'm told that a movie has to have depth and meaning to be good. It doesn't. That's bullshit. A movie like Tron is supposed to be fun. If I want to watch a thought provoking movie I'll turn on Sundance or something (where most of the movies are apt to be boring BECAUSE they're only concerned with being thought provoking more so than entertaining, to be entertained is still important, even in smart movies). I liked Tron Legacy, but I was very disturbed by this idea that even Tron, a movie that was NEVER about thought provocation decided they needed to have depth. Not every movie has to be this intelligent thought provoking thing and I was insulted that Tron Legacy tried to be. THAT was what made it so odd to watch. It's like... why would you do that? Probably because every movie is pressured to be that way now. What happened to just going to movies to have fun? To turn your brain off for a minute? I'm all for thought provoking and smart movies, but not when it comes to a film where it clearly isn't necessary. You wouldn't go and see Die Hard thinking, "Boy oh boy I sure hope this movie says something humanity!" So why would any idiot do so for Tron?
My rant is over. I wouldn't say I was too disappointed, just incredibly urked that some idiot decided that if he wasn't saying anything it wouldn't be worth watching. It's because Tron Legacy tries so hard to have a message that it was very hard to love.
Yes, I would've liked this movie more if it kept its story simpler or maybe just better developed than it turned out to be. If they found new ways to incorporate visuals and left futile attempts at something intelligent in the backdoor, then I may have enjoyed it more.
The director and the script was in over their heads with the plot's core. The problem was it may have been overreaching and I noticed some scenes that nay have been written out and then put back in the film; this killed it for me. It broke its own rules and contradicted itself, then it switched my instincts to pay attention to the plot because of the mood, amount of angst and set ups. I think we can both agree the film was badly directed and it approached it from an angle that shouldn't be.
review?
Question is: is bad direction, tedious dialogue and clumsy scripting to be ignored just because a movie is only meant as a display of movie magic? Isnt' any movie or entertainment medium meant to be judged as a final product whether all pieces fit together? Should we excuse overall quality for what it was supposedly meant to be visually speaking? Clearly they wanted to inject an intelligent plot into it when it tried to add themes and then never properly developed them....
This was a hard movie to review. It looks good, but the plot killed its aces...
If you have a 50" screen with a seat about 75-120 inches away, you'll be fine with a rental. Thanks for the read, bro!
