"Something to Marvel at"
The story starts off right away with Loki-Thors brother and Fallen God making a pact with some evil alien types. If Loki can construct a portal to Earth for the aliens to invade, they will be his army and he can keep the device that brought the conquering force to Earth. S.H.I.E.L.D. leader Nick Fury has to evacuate his base after Loki invades and Nick knows that war is on and calls in Captain America, Black Widow and Iron Man to try and locate Loki- who has Hawkeye possessed and in his employ now. Bruce Banner is located to help track the energy waves that can find Loki and with assurance that he won't Hulk out. Loki is found, captured but not without Thor's intervention who want's Loki taken back to Asgard.
If it's true that Whedon's strong point is characterization, then he triumphs here. Every character is suited and plays just as they should. Tony Stark is still, if not moreso a jerk, Captain America is the boy scout with super powers ready to lay down his life, Thor is haughty and Nick Fury is certainly an authority without giving anything away and it's when his secrets spill out in a key scene where each of the Avengers start emptying each others closets of skeletons and dirty laundry. This is a great scene and it showed my favorite scene with my favorite big screen version of Bruce Banner, here played by Mark Ruffalo who admits to how low he got in his struggle with the Hulk, not to mention in another moment, plays Bruce Banner as that guy who will let you snap you're fingers in his face all day and insist that you are not bothering him when in fact you are. When the man Hulks out, watch it.
The Avengers could have so easily flopped on it's face and in less competent hands but I'll concede that Joss Whedon does succeed here. You want Avengers, you get Avengers. You want superhero action that you can follow, trace and enjoy? You got it. You want you're big super hero movie for the summer that you were waiting 4 years for?
