From the day I walked out of that theatre after watching Captain America I was hyped, hyped for the Avengers. As much as I was hyped I got even more excited when I found out that Joss Whendon was directing. Ever since I started watching Superhero movies I’ve been dying for a film featuring a crossover of different characters from different comic books. While the Avengers technically are their own comic book (Marvel vs. DC is what I had in mind) it’s still something I’m excited to see.
Loki has come to earth in search of the Tesseract, an artifact of great power. With it he hopes to open a portal and let a massive army of Chitauri in to enslave the earth. In response Director Fury reintroduces The Avengers Initiative, bringing together earths greatest heroes to combat this new threat. (TAKE THAT SUPERMAN!!!!!)
My Hype was not misplaced; I loved every moment of this movie. I had a lot of fun watching it; that’s partly in thanks to Joss Whendons directorial style. There are a lot of funny moments and thankfully they do not take away from the tone of the movie. (Something I was scared it would do) I loved how the movie blended elements from each of the Avengers movies so well together, specifically the Universes of Thor and Ironman. (Thor being a more supernatural type hero and Ironman being more technology based.)
There is so much that the movie did well; something that I really liked was that each of the main characters got equal screen time which as you know is kind of difficult to do in a movie like this. I also loved the almost genuine Tension between Chris Evens Character Captain Steve Rogers (aka Captain America) and Robert Downey Juniors Character Tony Stark (aka Ironman), I felt that this was perfect as these two have opposite personalities and there was bound to be some rough edges.
Acting wise everything was perfect, I had some doubts about Mark Ruaffo taking on the role of Bruce Banner, but once I saw him in action all that doubt went away. He did a fine job, I still like the Edward Norton Bruce Banner but Mark is a decent replacement. Robert Downey Jr’s performance has remained consistent through out all four of his appearances, and as always he does a fine job as Tony Stark. If I can say anything more I think Mark Ruaffo and Robert Downey Jr are great on screen together.
Once Again Chris Evans does an outstanding job as the Star Spangled Man, he played his character with more maturity than in Captain America. (Not saying he was immature in that movie though) taking on a leadership role. The same thing goes for Samuel L Jackson; this time around he didn’t put as much of himself into his character as he has done with previous appearances. Something I really liked. Jeremy Renner didn’t get as much screen time as the other characters, but when he did show up it was awesome. Lastly Scarlett Johanson, I really liked her in Ironman 2; and she gets a lot more screen time now than last time. Like Robert Downey Junior, her performance has remained consistent. If I had anyone to criticize it would be TomHiddleston (aka Loki) I wasn’t a big fan of his performance. He seemed to be “just there” and that’s all. Apart from the fight with Thor he didn’t do much, which sucks because he could have been so much more.
Overall I had a blast watching this movie, all the actors and actresses played their roles well, and I applaud Joss Whendon for doing such a fine job with such a Massive project. As a fan of comic books and comic book movies, I can honestly say that I am not disappointed. Whether you are a comic book fan or not you will enjoy this movie. I know my review is a week late but if you haven’t already go out and watch this today.
