I remember watching the Twilight Zone as a kid in the 80s. I was pretty young and don’t remember that much about it, but I do remember the button episode. I think that is the one episode that every kid remembers. It was so creepy, and the ominous ending made you sure that you would never fall for that trick, and you would never press the button.
When The Box came up on Cinemax, I recognized the story immediately. Where the Twilight Zone version ends in an ominous cliffhanger, this story goes on to show what happens after the button is pressed. It’s a pretty interesting extension.
The worst thing about this movie was the horrible accent, I’m thinking maybe it was supposed to be Southern, that Cameron Diaz slips in and out of. I can only imagine the casting meeting, with Cameron Diaz agreeing to do the role if she could play it Southern. It’s just really bad, and there is nothing in the plot of the movie that requires her to speak this way. I guess maybe the director was afraid to tell her anything, she is Cameron Diaz after all? The accent itself was bad enough, but it was the fact that she only seemed Southern some of the time was just ridiculous, and it was absolutely not necessary to the plot.
Overall, the movie was okay.
Would I buy it? Absolutely not.
Would I rent it? I doubt it.
But, if it were on Cinemax and a friend wanted to watch it, I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing it a second time.
