A Further Look Behind the Mirror

  • Apr 19, 2012
The "plot" of THE CABIN IN THE WOODS is a classic cliché of horror films: a group of five friends travels to a cabin in the woods out in the middle of nowhere that is supposedly owned by a cousin of one of the friends. There's a jock, a slutty girl, a scholar, a stoner, and an innocent. The trip to the cabin is really spooky complete with a run-down gas station where the group stops for a fill-up and to make sure their directions to the cabin are correct. Once they get to the cabin in the woods, it's even creepier. However, from the opening sequence the audience already knows this isn't a typical horror movie because these five friends are under surveillance and everything about their trip seems predetermined. One can't really say more than that without giving important plot twists away.

THE CABIN IN THE WOODS is unlike any horror movie I have seen before. There's a lot of humor in the film that reminds one of the horror films of Sam Raimi (the EVIL DEAD movies, and DRAG ME TO HELL). Also, from the beginning I was reminded of the John Ritter movie, STAY TUNED. THE CABIN IN THE WOODS has elements from these films, yet it is something completely different. It starts out following many of the clichés of the horror genre and then manipulates those clichés into something different. Then, when you think you've got things figured out, it takes that idea and manipulates it again, changing it into something completely different.

The movie has broad appeal. There's tons of gore for those who like to see blood and guts. There's a flash of female nudity for the horny males. There's the secret mind game that seems to be going on for those who enjoy the mystery and suspense that often accompanies a horror story. There's the occasional cheap scare where something jumps up or pops out of nowhere. All of those elements are in THE CABIN IN THE WOODS. However, all of those elements are carefully manipulated to fit into the grand scheme of the movie that's a carefully constructed critique of the horror genre in general.

Though THE CABIN IN THE WOODS is one of the best horror movies I've seen in years, it's not a movie that will appeal to everyone. Those who don't like horror films should stay away as well as anyone who is squeamish when seeing lots of blood. All kinds of people die in this movie and they die in ways you'd never expect. Beyond that, THE CABIN IN THE WOODS is the best horror movie to be released in years. I know the next time I visit a cabin in the woods, I'll be looking for the strings.

Macabre Humor and Jump Scares...Horror Comedy Done Right!
One of the names that is almost guaranteed to make me want to see a movie (or read a comic book) is Joss Whedon. Despite the less-than-impressive trailers, this was why I’ve decided to take a chance with “The Cabin in the Woods” and honestly, I really did not know what to expect. Once you see the opening title reel, you would know exactly what you are in for. It would be easy to dismiss it as a horror B-movie romp with some twisted touches and macabre humor around it. Yeah, …

Star Rating:         “I love being scared.” So said Joss Whedon in an interview with Total Film regarding The Cabin in the Woods, which he produced and co-wrote with director Drew Goddard. “The things that I don’t like are kids acting like idiots, the devolution of the horror movie into torture porn and into a long series of sadistic comeuppances. Drew and I both felt that the pendulum had sung a little too far in that direction.” When …
